They're gorgeous! Uhm... what happened to the one on the right's comb... downed power line?

No they need more space which was to happen this weekend. Maybe son in law can help me move fencing in the morning, he's painting the barn right now. Roosters are fighting for dominance. May have to move him in with older hens. Was hoping they'd work it out.

Extra space may help ease some of the tension between the two... as long as he behaves and doesn't try to mount too many hens. They might eventually work it out... or the poor guy might lose more than part of his comb. Hope it works out for the best...

@h2oratt
, let me elaborate on that a little.... If you get them from a feed store and they start dying, it probably means that they were sick when you got them, or that they got chilled in transit back home. One must hone their skills and learn how to spot unhealthy chicks. When buying chicks, stand and watch all of them.

  • Do not pick any that are standing with their eyes shut.
  • Do not pick any thin ones
  • Do not pick any with droopy wings
  • Do not pick any with poopy butts
  • Pick only ones that are actively eating or running around
  • Pick only ones with food in their crops

The trip home
  • Keep warm

Thank you

Once home, monitor poop. Abnormal poop will mean that something is wrong.

Thank you

Just popping in again... which seems to be all I have time for lately. I candled on Thursday, and pulled 10 of the 30 eggs. There are another 4 that look iffy, but I'm going to let them go a little longer. Might get lucky and get a dozen from this batch... Been working on the new coop most of the day. Finished the floor and started putting up wall studs. I know... not the conventional way of building... but I'm anything but conventional. :lau
Awesome
Ohhhh my garsh, that is heaven to me. If I had two acres... I would have a blueberry field.
I have blueberries here as far as the eye can see
Thanks again! It's mostly Bahia, but the front yard, side yards, and back to the fig trees in the back yard is St. Augustine. Yes, the chickens loved it when they had free run of the place, but the neighbor's dog ruined it for them. It came into my front yard and took one of the chickens home. It was roughed up, but survived the ordeal. The next one wasn't so lucky. I strung up 150' of 6' chicken wire, and that's their "free range" area now. When they decimate the grass in it, I'll move the wire to another location. It would be easier if the stupid dog next door would disappear. Hmm...
I'd make him disappear... It's legal here to take care of a flock killer
I'm enjoying the hell out of it at the moment; O's up 3-2
No it is, 4-2

Been watching pretty closely as I'm around he's been ok. Guy I got them from says to remove the lesser of two when they come in to age. I'm thinking that's about now. I already took the third rooster out as they were too much for him.
