What's the earliest that you all have successfully integrated your new chicks with older flock? I have read so many different pages and articles on this, but just curious what your actual experiences are.

Never set chicks under a broody before, so I have a question:
After chicks hatch & mama lets them go exploring, do they have sense enough to get back into the chicken yard through the 2x4 welded wire fence when mama calls them?
Quote: Yep, that's why I took the chicken wire down, figured more openings was better.

lol, goatsYeah, I drew pictures of horses as a little girl, but that happened at a formative age (about 8 years old), and after that incident I just lost any interest in pursuing it as a hobby or activity. I should add that when I was older (middle school), I was with a friend when she was grooming her horse in the stall, and got my foot stepped on and nearly got it broken. So... I've tried to keep it from being an unreasonable phobia, but haven't really had good experiences with large animals like that and don't like being near them. Probably wouldn't enjoy having cows or pigs...
GOATS, on the other hand...![]()
always comes back to the goats, doesn't it?!)

preparation is very important, you are making good choices! maybe someone will also change your mind about the goats....I actually have some work to do to figure out my own yard/property for them. But I've been wandering around after reading a bit, and am realizing that I've got pretty good quality forage here for them to enjoy (though I would feed in addition to that, of course). I need to get the number of chicken "families" down and consolidate, to make space for them. I'm fortunate that most of the kids are sold for the year at the breeder I'd like to use, so at the soonest, I would get them next year around April or so. If I'm really good, I'll wait. We'll see if I can stand it.
I keep telling myself the longer I wait, the more I'll learn and the more prepared I'll be. I decided to get chickens about 3 or 4 years before I actually did.![]()

Thats awesome Beautiful work!Let me know if this works!
They just sprayed three coats of concrete onto the buildings and details are now being sculpted in. My job last week was cutting and installing the mirrors in the bathroom of the more finished building just to the right of the newest structures....
Like mirrors in a funhouse. Guy in green taking the picture is a contractor, girl in MASH shirt is an intern from University of Cincinnati, I'm in the orange and Jim is next to me.
The bathroom window and mosaic.
I will try to get some pictures this week to make more sense of this bathroom that we have dubbed, "The Sistine Bathroom".
Chicken and duck news coming up.....
Oh, and I have runner duck and bantam EE eggs over on the auction site if anyone here is interested

Cool morning here again.
That's a great question, that I don't have an answer for. I would imagine the temperament of the breed would effect the answer though. What's the earliest that you all have successfully integrated your new chicks with older flock? I have read so many different pages and articles on this, but just curious what your actual experiences are.

I'm going to leave some eggs in the nest; hopefully it'll trigger the brooding instinct in someone & we'll see how it goes. Fake eggs certainly didn't work.
Will probably pitch them today.how much longer you givin the dead ones
