You have to stop them. You won't get production from them till at least 3 weeks after breaking them.
I know you have some wire bottom cages. Put the hens in there with no bedding, but with food and water and place them in the coolest area on the property elevated to get cool air to their underside.
A hen that isn't broken from being broody, may stay broody forever till her demise.

A friend of mine never bothered to break her broody hens. She had a turkey broody for a couple months. $3000 of vet bills and a month of physical therapy later, the hen still died. They sit so long and without much physical activity along with little food and water, they get to where they can't move.

Either give them fertile eggs to hatch or into broody jail they go.

I just put 7 eggs under a broody hen. Ideally I will put them somewhere else around day 18 so they don't fall out of the box she's in if they hatch. Is 7 too many? Shes a Swedish flower hen so she's pretty little... Do those of you who use broody hens put them somewhere specific or ? I hope my other bird will be back out in the coop by the time they're developing, is it ok to move them later? My other hens foot is looking about 1/2 as swollen so I think she's going to be ok but one of my buff orps is just laying around and really pale. I tried having her walk the yard and I brought her inside because I can't tell if she's broody, sick, egg bound... We gave her a little corid because her tail was down and she just looked miserable I went to sick but it's been 5 days and she looks the same. Not a peep and she's not moving around ... Thoughts?

7 should be good. If you look in on her and any eggs are poking out, you may want to rethink numbers.

They can stay with the flock but I prefer to move them to their own quarters. They don't miss companionship and you can give the hen and chicks starter feed. You can move them any time up to about day 19. Earlier is better.

I'm not sure Corid is the right approach if there's no signs of coccidiosis.
If she's sitting in the nest and puffing up when you disturb her, she's likely broody. If she's just lethargic and not staying in the nest, then something else is wrong.
Try to get a fecal sample from her read.
Be ready to send her off for a necropsy if she dies.
Depending on how you feel about your birds, it wouldn't hurt to send her off now for euthanasia and necropsy so you know for sure what you're dealing with.

No goat news! Sorry I forgot who asked. I haven't put hands on her in two days, so I need to make an effort to do that.

Roxie nearly strangled herself on muscadine vines a few days ago. My farm friend up the road was here, and we were outside visiting so luckily I saw it just as it happened. Farm friend said I need to worm everyone, so that's on my list now.

She hasn't laid an eggs but maybe she's egg bound... Or sick... Would she stop do you think if she was sick for a whole week? She's over a year old so she's a really good layer usually... Last year one of my buffs were so broody for what seemed like forever I was dragging her out like crazy... I looked at my brahma and called her and she broke...

Would she stop what?
Carrying them around may work but is a hassle that eats up your day.
A broody hen won't lay eggs. A sick hen may not lay eggs either.
An egg bound bird is usually obvious because they constantly go into the nest straining. They sometimes moan and their vent pulses.

It's a garter. Not a threat to anything. I love having them around. It is in more danger from your chickens.

Puppy says hi. Wounds are healing quickly, she'd be back outside already if it weren't for the flies.


She's the most friendly bird I have - she was the first chick named, because when I came to the edge of the brooder as early as <1 week she came running to me. She knows her name and to this day comes running when I yell "Puppy" and then looks up at me waiting for me to pick her up (usually because she has escaped her paddock again

). She loves having her earlobes rubbed - likes having her belly rubbed as well.



Really glad I built that brooder and left it put together - it's been great to be able to put injured birds in there at a moment's notice, and the increased height makes it easier to check on them.

Well it's hot where you live so that makes it tougher. You may have to resort to more drastic measures, like putting them in an elevated cage in the air conditioning or putting ice in the nest.
At any rate, you have to get their underside temperature lowered to break the hormone cycle.
