I should go to the chef thread, but I am going to ask here now. My birds have rested that I processed Saturday.
I have never had a home grown bird. How would you guys
prepare the first one? The others went in the freezer.Oven or grill. I think soup and crock pots are for tough meats though a pressure cooker is OK.
That depends on the age of the birds.
If they are Cornish X or red rangers under 10 weeks, you can just use normal chicken recipes. If they're heritage birds that are older - especially if they have been free ranging - you can't cook them that fast. For a bird that has been using its muscles for a while, you need to cook it on low heat slowly.
For a bird like that, it is easiest to part it out and cook the legs/thighs/wings separately from the breast which will cook up quicker.
You can do the bird whole though. To do that, I preheat to about 375 and cook breast up for about 10 minutes. Then drop the heat to 220, turn the bird over breast down in some broth. Cook till the leg meat separates from the bone. A bird of that age will have its own flavor so salt, pepper and perhaps a bit of rosemary is sufficient.

@Sally Sunshine I don't know about cruises, but I have been planning my long awaited trip for next summer. I have decided to do a couple of different things in the hopes my one friend can at least do the Yellowstone part. I am going to go on about a five day pack trip in the Tetons, then a two and a half or three day hike in the Belcher region of Yellowstone (SW corner), followed by a stop at Old Faithful and another spot or so. If I have the time and money, I will go rafting the last afternoon. I figure around ten days. I will nail that down as I get further into my planning when the maps get here.
I did not see how did the pheasant hatch go?
@BantyChooks Go Chickies!
Good for you. Sounds great.

Anyone wanting to see Glacier National Park needs to go now. The glaciers will be gone within 10 years.
But there is no such thing as global warming.

@Sally Sunshine I am sorry you are not well enough. Neither are two of my friends one of which would love to come. That is part of the reason why I am going next summer even if I have to go by myself or with strangers. We just don't know what will happen even later today. I want to plan it while I am still healthy enough. I am not old yet, but I am beginning to get whispers.

The offer stands if anyone is interested in coming to all or part of the trip.
It isn't a problem travelling alone. You meet more people that way. You also don't have to wait for someone else's schedule.
My daughter doesn't wait for someone to go with her. She's 27 and has been to 12 European countries and 4 SE Asian countries, all travelling alone.
