Enjoy Texas, hope it isn't too hot.

  Hi Chaos!

Hello. Glad you found the eggs and were able to put them back. Any idea on how many they have?

I doubt is she would quit, she seems serious. Take her off and mark the eggs. I'd wear long sleeves and work gloves if I were going to pick her up.

  Good morning Bant! :frow

Approximately 30 among 5 hens. Two of which have the majority in the corner of nest if that's what you would call the chaos in there. Sorry Chaos

MC already said it, but I was gonna say you would drink the black stuff and dump the frufru down the sink.
The frufru was given to me and I'm not one to turn away free coffee.

Yes, I do.

But I also know that Chaos does not, so I know what he would do!

Both my kids drink it straight black as well.

Black hot or iced or not even iced. Fru fru isn't coffee.
This is true.

It comes with the territory.

Then glug the frufru quick, and wash the taste out of your mouth with the black coffee.

That hen that's gone broody is still sitting tight, her wings spread out like a blanket, but I'm wondering if I should take her off the nest long enough to mark the eggs, and risk having her quit, It's been better than 2 days like that, and I haven't been able to catch her off the nest to poop or eat. She "growls" whenever I or another bird get too close,so I doubt she's let another bird lay an egg in her nest to this point.

The only other time one of my hens brooded, I didn't think to date any eggs, and she wound up with 12-15 eggs under her, none of which hatched.

I thought about putting her in a crate so the others can't get to her, but the only crates I have are too big to fit in the coop.  I could crate her under the coop, or in the run, I guess.

Any suggestions?

Based on my most recent broody experience I would mark the ones she has for sure. I attempted to allow her to hatch where she was originally nesting and out of 8 eggs that she originally had only 1 managed to hatch. Others were adding, they were getting cracked, I suspect at least in part from her trying to keep the other hens out. Once the chick hatched and came off the nest for the first time my rooster wasn't sure what to think about it and killed it. It will probably be some time before I allow a broody, in the past I always broke them, but when I do I will plan for them to have separate quarters.
