do you have probiotics you can give?  I am so sorry, with my knowledge of young birds, I would automatically treat with corid or a sulfa med. and ad electrolytes and I have proprebiotics.

I dont tube feed chickens, but she may need fluids and tube feeding....  see Kathys signature for links on them

Thanks, I'm going to go ahead and start the Corrid. That is more of an emergency and more of a quick killer, so will go with that. I do have all of the stuff you mentioned in stock for "just in case" after reading all of your posts on the hatch a longs! Thank you so much for your help, and thanks to everyone else too. I hope I can save her.

:hugs      its going to be tough if she is already bone thin in front, sorry about her.  I wish you the best, please let us know how it goes, you may want to send some poo to the vet and see if they show worms or cocci just in case, and perhaps you want to send her off for testing.  Good Luck

Morning Everyone. I am at work so just popping in. Strange happenings with the quail. The ones hatching that are not in the turner are splayed leg or worse. The ones from the turner are active and healthy.

what do you have them on in the brooder?  papertowels I hope?

Yes paper towels on brooder floor. Probiotics and electrolytes as well.

very odd!!!!  sounds like you did everything correct, what about in the bator, did you have anything on the floor in it?

sometimes leg issues can be incubation related.

Yes bator floor is small spaced plastic, they can stand fine. The temp and humidity were kept steady until lock down when I bumped it to 60% or a tad more. Just strange the ones hatching with leg issues are the eggs that were taken off the turner 2 days before hatch as per bator instructions. Really thinking I need a better bator or not hatch ever again. Well after the 24th.

Hi. I have 6 eggs in my brinsea mini eco, and today is day 18(day 16 for one egg but that's a different story). I was going around and marking the air cells for the last time, when I noticed that the little cochin bantam egg that has a small air cell(I don't know why, all the others air cells are fine. The humidity has been at 30-41 % the entire time) is already internally pipped. Is that bad? Will it not have enough air? Will it drown since the air cell is too small?? Will I have to make a small hole in the air cell end of the shell so it has enough air? Sorry, I'm just really worried. This is only my second time hatching in an incubator...I can add a picture if you people want so you can see the size of the air cell.

How old are they?

If they're pullets, I'd just wait longer.
Do you have housing options to keep the cockerels separated a while? I've had some cockerels I didn't want to use and kept as backups. However when they got older, they looked better than my primaries.

What breed are you talking about?
Almost 28 weeks, so they are still pullets. Some of the cockerels that are still growing (17 weeks old) look like they have some really good potential as primaries. If I made a bachelor group would I have to worry about them fighting? Dominiques are what I am talking about. Egg size is supposed to be medium ~49-56 grams, currently getting 42-43 grams.

dunno, never looked into that, we discussed it a few years ago on the diary thread and I cant remember anything about it.

I'll let you know if it's true or not

I keep wanting to add up the lost cash in my head but I dont think I could bare it :hit I was so proud to fill my freezer with my own birds and our friend butchers left overs and great buys. All that processing of those meaties ughhhhhh at least the kids get to eat good for a bit.
i know the feeling it happened to me last year, gave all of it to my mom to cook at her house
The church gave us their extra freezer a while back & it's in better shape than either of the two we already have, so we're o.k. unless the power goes out for a long time; no generator. The problem is, it's a chest freezer, which I prefer over an upright, but it's hilarious watching DW, at 4' 9", standing on a stepstool trying to reach the bottom. One of these times I'm gonna have a camera handy :gig
lol, ot you'll have to fish her out of it
What humidity do you usually run them at?
are you getting seramas??
Help please: I have a beautiful SQ silkie that is 4 months old, and that I hatched and raised myself, and that seemed perfectly healthy yesterday. Today, its crop is empty, it is laying on its side, it isn't eating or drinking, and I'm very worried that I am going to lose it. I put some electrolytes in its water and dipped its beak. It is now standing up, but does not look good. What do I do? It does look like it may have had diarrhea, but no blood in stool. It seems very thin. The rest are all doing well.
so sorry!! i would try giving yogurt too

If you aren't fearful of losing some to predators, I'd just be patient. In a few more weeks, you should get in that range.
You may also want to up the protein to increase egg size. Add a little animal protein to the diet. The amount of yolk and albumen added are affected by dietary protein. The calcium carbonate will encase that no matter how big or small the yolk is.
Another thing is that a bird with adequate dietary calcium and adequate bodily stores will deposit about the same amount of calcium carbonate on an egg regardless of the size. That makes pullet egg shells thicker and sometimes harder to hatch from.

I've successfully raised bachelor groups together with little or no fighting. It's when there are girls in the mix that fighting ensues.
Even if they strutted and scuffled a bit during the day, they would sleep in a big boy pile on a feed bin at night.
