Question: should I candle the eggs that are under the broody, like I would if I was incubating them? To check for duds, etc? She fusses at me when I move them around, but she isn't violent (yet). Just curious if I should plan to candle them on day 7.

nope she knows what to do (or at least should know what to do)

Some do and some don't, I wouldn't.

Should? No. Can you? Yes.

Their grass has not been cut in over a month. If the chicks couldn't see to follow the moms or got caught on something...

If I tell you what you want to hear, will you believe me?
Call the hatchery. They have guarantees.
I will! I just looked up their guarantee on their website. I only ordered five chicks.

I'm still giving them a call if I end up getting three cockerels out of five pullets. That's just wrong, IMO! (OK, so maybe I didn't read the whole thing before I ordered. Oops.

"90% Sexing Accuracy Guaranteed - If greater than 10% males are received in a pullet order of 25 or more, IDEAL will refund the difference between pullet and male price for all excess males"

Of course I can tell you that. Just because a chick's tail grows in really slow, doesn't mean that it's a cockerel.
Is it likely? I mean, I know it doesn't absolutely mean that, but is it more likely? I'm kinda thinkin' that they are cockerels anyways, because the middle of the comb is starting to turn pinkish. It's not turning pink anywhere else, though, so I don't know ....

I love snow. I will love it more when I have heated auto water for the chickens.

One of my favorite activities.

Carrying water to chickens 3 times a day through the snow - not so much.
That is the absolute BEST winter activity EVER!!!! I can't wait til winter!

Chaos failed geometry but is still smarter than the average bear (possibly due to the fact the average bear dont make it past algebra,) Liz folds TP into triangles, Bubbles needs three cups of coffee, (or is that kawfee?) Liz has an infestation of giant Gambian pouched rats and possibly 5 legged albino moose as well, MC wants to trap a cat but doesn't want any pesky coon interfering with the trap, guinea catching is painful, whites gives baby bunnies haircuts, Kat says hi to those of us who are invisible, Sally is a spring chicken, pensmaster has breakfast in a brick, the olympics have us horse people glued to the screens (Boo to NBC for restricting access,) CC fries rabies free coons, whites and CC need to adjust their wavelengths, carrying fresh water to chickens 3x a day is nobody's favourite winter sport, Liz is mistaken about who's undigested matter to investigate, and the TP debate has been settled once and for all!

Sorry its so short. I seem to have lost my touch.
