.......And with OEGB, they're just plain always broody. No matter the season.... Little boogers!
I've had friends with games and silkies that are relentless. Many of these old poultrymen have embraced bantams because of the economics. I'm just not a fan because I was raised with LF leghorns and after over 30 breeds, I'm more of a utilitarian bird guy. LF with good egg production, meat qualities and occasional broodiness.

Gross, yet true. I can't see eating a bird with only enough meat for a nugget. But I know a lot of you guys do it.
In addition to the other comments, you could have your water in a cold spot.
I like a lot of meat too but some birds will never put that much on, no matter how much they eat.

Could be tasty. Maybe a new gourmet fast food idea.

Well, now I don't feel special. I thought I was a lucky person for getting to be so involved with the doves. They are just that stupid.

You are special. Which is synonymous with both magical and weird.
I found a video for you but it is about feeding abandoned doves, not newly hatched ones. There probably is one for hatchlings.

Double check with the incubating experts, but I think the temp of still air incubators is supposed to be close to 102.

I know people here like those higher temps in a still air (perhaps why they hatch early).
However, I still go by 100.5 at the top of the egg.
The reason being, embryos can survive and hatch at 98 but at 104, they'll fail. My thinking is that most thermometers are off by a degree or more. If you're at 100.5 in a still air and it's off by a degree or two, they'll hatch just fine. If you're at 102 and they are reading low, it will be a poor hatch.

@ChickenCanoe Trust me any work involved in figuring out how to make the doors work for your coop and actually installing the doors is far out weighed by the immediate relief the first time they operate. Pressure is off you did not realize you were feeling and it us one less chore.

Loving my doors!

I believe you. I've been planning and accumulating materials for a couple years. Haven't started assembly yet but now I'm working out the automation.
The complicated thing is that I need 15 doors in 3 different buildings. That's if I don't put one in the brooder house.

I'm all about fewer chores. That's why many of the buildings have auto water and bulk feeders.

My wife would probably like me more if we didn't have to be home by dusk every evening. Maybe that's what is keeping me from finishing the project.

My daughter asked if her silkies could be allowed to raise some babies next year. I told her I'd think about it. LOL

Silkies are meant to raise chicks. Let them do their job or life is harder. They won't lay eggs while broody anyway, you might as well have more chickens.

Questions for the hatching experts...

  1. How often do chicks start peeping before they pip internally?
  2. What cause the sack they're in to be really thick?

Nice looking guppies you got there Seth! That water looks very cloudy and I worry about the fish. Have you added anything to the water? Do you have water testing strips to check the water quality? They are good to have so that you know which way to fix any problems.

If the water really is as cloudy as it looks in the pics something is wrong. You could go back to where you got the fish and get 5-10 or so gallons of conditioned tank water. Then remove most of the water from tank (like just enough for the fish to swim in like I inch). Then add an inch of conditioned water. Then add another inch every 3-4 hours till the tank is full again. That way you exchange the water with healthy water without shocking the fish.
Do you have a filter and a heater in addition to the aerator?

I love black sail fin mollies! Do you have a heater? If they get chilled they can get Ich... white pin sized dots on their velvety body and fins. Can be treated. On the bright side they eat algae off the tank. I miss my tropicals. Great success to you!

I just spent five minutes trying to find a cartoon of a ten pound dove. I finally gave up, came back, and thought of something else. I thought you hated a lot of meat.

Not what you meant, but still a valid point.

Could be tasty. Maybe a new gourmet fast food idea.
BK has hotdogs. McDonald's can get dove. Didn't they use horse meat a few years ago?

You are special. Which is synonymous with both magical and weird. Hey, now! LOL

Are you really trying to tempt me to hand raise the baby? Or, is this JIC?

LOL! Enabler!
