One of our little grey chickens was dead this morning when we went out there.

Between the flies, wasps, and longer grass that needs cut, We are on a mission to mow the goat area (guess 2 goats wasn't enough to keep it down.) deep cleaning/moving the coop, to make sure there's no wasp nests nearby, and I got my son scrubbing out all the water buckets, and refilling everything, to make sure it's not an algea problem.

My daughter "failed" to mention that her chicken yesterday was acting sick. She was fine the day before when I went out there with her. She said she'd been panting really hard. We did have a super hot day yesterday, and it could have been heat stroke, or an egg problem. She doesn't lay eggs very often to begin with, compared to our white cochin and RIR hen.

I hate how we seem to lose a chicken every few weeks, (although, it mostly happens when it's SUPER hot... and we didn't put the frozen ice out yesterday for them.... so now I feel guilty. I thought it had cooled off enough not to cause heat stroke issues.)

If you lose a chicken every few weeks, you should be getting necropsies. You have a big choice for state labs.

Alright well I set the last four wih the damaged air cells and I cut one of the egg cartons you sent in the box and made a little four dozen and set all four of those ones up right with fat end up, and the temp is fluctuating so I don't know what of the two thermometer/thermostats to go by or trust. I took out the top tray so I can fit all of them in and none are getting cracked from the turning tray stick that turns the tuner. And I will just have to turn them by hand.

If you don't know which one to trust, best rule of thumb is to pick a number between the two.

My daughter's taking it okay... but now she's even MORE insistant, that her two silkies are house birds, and only go outside when the temp's just right to free range in a dog kennel. LOL

I did warn her, when we started getting chickens, that sometimes, they die a lot, even when you do everything right.

I checked for mites, no sign of them. I'll deworm again, too, just to be sure...

But, she was found dead this morning, in the nesting box, in a position of laying an egg... so I don't know if the heat yesterday stressed her out too much, and she didn't look egg bound. So I don't know exactly what happened. I wish sometimes that chickens could talk and tell you what's wrong. They often won't show they are sick, until it's too late to save them.

Cut her open to see if there's a stuck egg, then look for unusual issues with organs.

I am just seeing a program called the Human planet and just lernd about a wonderful Inuit dish FERMENTED BIRD! made of birds fermented with all their fathers guts ect! The dish is called Kiviak

Pretty much, but I can manage...just can't manage as much time on backyard chickens! LOL!

If you do 3 persons' jobs, it won't be long before they realize there are 2 people they don't need to employ any more.

I live in a residential neighborhood, not like out in a country area. I've been here over 25 years, and probably 20 years ago, we had a possum that would run across our yard to get to the neighbor's apricot trees. Sadly, the neighbor is gone and all the trees are now gone. The only problem we have are domestic cats. So far none have gone after my birds, but I shoo them away when I see them. I am not a cat lover as it is. I'm not saying there aren't skunks and kit foxes,coyotes and even mountain lions here where I live, but not in the city is all. I think they know better to come in,and there's plenty of open space all around us that is better habitat for them. Hopefully, I won't ever have to eat my words

There are 10-50 times more raccoons per square mile in cities than in rural areas. If you don't have a trail cam or sit out all night in a blind with night vision glasses, you would be shocked at how many critters cross your property in the dark.

@daxigait Dad was NOT happy! I am pretty sure that the egg in there is just the shell. I will have to read up on how soon the mom starts laying again. I assumed it was at least three weeks.

Yeah, I can let my husband cut the chicken open to look inside. He knows what a normal chicken should look like he's worked in a butcher shop before.

We lost roosters to heat stroke, and 1 hen to a dog attack.... err and 1 chicken to the other chickens killing it the night they got here. It was a runt.

We aren't losing them to the same thing, or i'd be sending them for testing.

For those of you who hatch your own chickens, do you use vaccinations?

If so - where do you order your vaccines and kit to give them?

I'm... a big believer in protecting my animals if there's a benefit to doing so and there's available vaccines to help.


What do you do for your day old chicks?

I paid extra for our chicks to be vaccinated by the hatcheries when we got them... but hatching our own made me realize I hadn't thought about that, until today.
