Yeah, I shouldn't shoot here either. How about a crossbow. A good pellet gun will work for possums but may not work for coons. I tried to be quieter by using cb shells in my 22 revolver. They weren't that quiet and the raccoon looked at me like he was saying - "is that all you got?"
Hmmmm... crossbow....would that shoot through a hav-a-hart type trap?
Am ordering 3 of those dogproof leg traps from fleming and dogs treed a possum the other night. I know I could shoot one in the open like that, but should I even set the box trap if I'm using a crossbow to dispatch?

It's amazing that I never had any Javas. Being from NJ, I had JG. I might need to specialize in two breeds!

Sorry. I couldn't possibly eat a dozen or so eggs every single day!
Good plan. I love JGs but no longer have the time and space for them.

You can eat some.

If I can't get anyone to buy my eggs, how on earth would I get them to buy baked goods? It is much easier to just let the flock have them back.
Then have fewer birds. If you feed them, you should get something from them.

Sorry to hear about that dropped egg :( What's the earliest that a chick can be born and be viable?
If it makes it out on its own, it will likely be viable.
An egg doesn't expel a chick like a mammal can.

free range and laying pellets we give them cracked red pepper yogurt and stuff.and most are young about 7 my months to a yeast old
Maybe most haven't started laying yet. Birds reaching POL after summer solstice tend to start much later.
How old is a yeast?

So there's no way to save a baby chick, on say day 18 if you drop it before lock down? :(

Depends on the arrow head. A broadhead wouldn't fit but a target point could.

Yes. Seal the egg with liquid skin. I had one hatch last month that was 60+% cracks at around day 14.

Quote: A bit. There was a time, not all that long ago, when I logged more time on this thread and its predecessor than anyone, then I started construction on what for me is a major undertaking, considering my less than rudimentary carpentry skills ( although I can swing a hammer with either hand and hit the nail 3 out of 10 times), and it's made major inroads into my BYC/Sally time.
I'd be out there now if the weather weren't so nasty.

I'm looking at some of the Saipan Game Fowls... my husband keeps saying he thought they'd be a nice addition to a backyard flock since they are so mean/predator savvy.

I just am not 100% sold on a 3 foot tall chicken that may not like us. I'd hate to have to shoot one if they try to attack me...or beat it with a stick.
