Incubation Procedure Help (STARTING TOMORROW)

Hi,

My quail eggs will be delivered tomorrow. However, I leave for the airport tomorrow at 6 am.

Here is my plan:

  • I leave incubator (with water in it) plugged into a smart plug which is plugged into wall
  • I call my friend when the package delivers
  • My friend puts eggs inside the turning tray
  • 12 hours later, after egg has been in the incubator at room temperature for 12 hours, I turn on the incubator remotely.
  • It will automatically heat up to 37.8C
My questions:
  1. How much water should I put in the Janoel 12 to last 12 eggs 4 days at 37.8 C?
  2. Do they need to sit at room temp after shipping?
  3. Can the eggs be in the incubator while it heats up? The only alternative is for my friend to put them in a pre-heated incubator right after being delivered.

Shipped eggs should be left standing at room temperature for 24 hours. I have the Janoel 12 and found I didn't need water for quail or chicken eggs until day 7, but I'm in England so it might be different for you. I usually let mine sit in the incubator while it heats up as my Janoel takes about ten minutes to get to the right temp. When I bought shipped eggs the air cells were detached, once they've sat for a day, you would want to candle them to access their state. The Janoels turning tray has the eggs laying down and rolls them, which isn't ideal in the slightest for shipped eggs so I had mine standing in egg trays and turned them by hand, still got 0 hatch rate... my apologies, I don't want to put you off!
 
Ideally, the incubator should be running for a couple days before you add eggs to make sure that it can keep a steady accurate temp.

What's the humidity like where you are? Eggs don't really need any added water in incubation until lockdown unless you're in a very dry area, so my answer to 1 is no water at all. Do keep at least one thermometer and humidity reader in there that has proven to be accurate.

It's good for shipped eggs to rest for at least 12 hours with the thick end up before putting them in the bator, giving the air cells a chance to settle.

Also, make sure they know to put them in with the small end down!
I sent them this (exact incubator and eggs I will have). Is this not how it should be?

Good to know. I would rather have low expectations than high ones. So the picture above is not how it should be?

I am in Texas, and inside my home is generally at 55% humidity.

So I assume when you say big end up, you do not mean this? I showed my friend this but can tell them differently if I am wrong. @featheredplanets told me above that they have to be laying down for this incubator.
