Incubation progress of Muscovy eggs

All nine of mine had to be helped out and I might have been able to save one of the ones that died if I had seen the dark spot in time, I could have pipped for it.

All your eggs that you had in the bator have hatched Kathy? were have I been?

Ok, Whew!! What a night! 5 out of 6 made it. Well the last one is flying through his zipping! he hadn't even externally pipped until about 2 hours ago. now he's half zipped.
Thank you to Dr @Lacrystol for excellent info via texting and FaceTiming.
Couldn't have done it without you.
3 had to be helped. 2 on they're own. I don't know what I did wrong, but I think it's multiples.

-I had a staggered hatch with chicks, so humidity was at different levels.40% for most, 65% for chick hatch, then 51% until lock down. But I did weigh throughout and they were a little under weight or just right.

-I put them in LATE on a Sat (Jan 26??) So I counted the next day as day 1. which is ok, but i kept turning until day 3 when I should have stopped on 4. I read it, but was thinking to stop misting on day 4. So technically I stopped turning just shy of day 3 .
They were all turned around. 1 pipped wrong end, 2 wrong side of the air cell. 1 wrong side of the cell, but is moving quickly now.

I also tried to make sure the small ends were down at lockdown, but didn't realize the essential need for it.

Hmm, i probably missed more. Oh ya, speaking of Mist. I was a little confused on the misting. They were underweight, so I misted but some days lighter than others. Maybe not enough, but actually I couldn't have been doing that wrong too. I got them damp, but not overly wet.

So all in all, 5 are doing good. In spite of me, lol

Mission has been COMPLETED, so out of 6 eggs, we only lost one but I believe he had died before he even reached his Due date. That's a pretty good hatching for someone who's never hatched out ducks, She did Verg good considering we were up all night last night waiting for them to make progress. GRRRR So the FIFTH ONE is zipping out of his shell on his own, the rest are out and alive...

How EXHAUSTING.....

As far as my hatching methods, I don't have a Magic Powers, I don't do anything special to get a good hatching rate. I have watched, studied and learned from the best. I have tried MANY different ways, many different things to finally get what works for me.

I believe I have mention it several times. I'm NO SMART PANTS, I'M NOT A MISS KNOW IT ALL, nor do I try to be, I just know with all the different attempts what FINALLY has made it so successful for me.

I have NEVER weighed my eggs because I believe the LESS that you touch them, the better they are off. They have the pore as was mentioned should play a KEY role here.

So in short, it took a lot of tries before it worked for me. It takes a lot of Errors and each hatching is a learning experience. If you watch careful at what your doing you will be able to pick up your down falls and be able to correct them to be more successful..

i love to learn, so everyone's way to do it is always so helpful. I named some of my errors, but hopefully i understand them fully. That is what bothers me, thinking I've learned from my mistakes but not really have. I wouldn't of had them all out right now without your help. Thank you

I will post some tomorrow for sure. i'm kinda loopy and tired right now. I should be in bed. We checked the one every 2 hours all night

FYI, I read somewhere that Muscovies are more sensitive to dehydration than other breeds of ducks, so I think it's important to get them drinking, ASAP, the three day rule does *not* apply to them. Maybe someone that breeds Muscovies can comment... No need to worry now, get some sleep and deal wit it tomorrow.

Quote: No, they were all laid here, stored fat end up in a cool room. One was not fertile, one had a blood ring, four died at or near 26 days, four hatched as they should have. I put the next 9 eggs under two banty cochins in my house, lol, and all 9 hatched.

-Kathy

sounds like it could have been bacterial .. or mishandling..
I was so careful and the eggs were *very* clean. You should have seen me, peahens lay at about the same time every day, so I would be out there waiting and I would pick that egg up the moment it was laid. Actually had one hen lay from the perch and I caught those as they fell! This year I'll be using an incufridge for storage, not just a cool room in the house.

-Kathy

yeah.. but it's still easy to contaminate them with bacteria.. either from your hands.. the candler or from the incubator itself

Other than that it would have to had been something in your incubation process.. but bacteria would be my first guess without having been there
