Incubators Anonymous

So here's the latest results of this weekend's hatch. (Although it's possible more can hatch, I have a feeling this is all.)
My happy broody adopted the 5 chicks

2 silkie x serama mixes

2 lav orps

1 serama

Congratulations! They're adorable!

Got home from a weekend road trip while my brother pet sat. The little silkie was stuck in her dried up egg with just her beak sticking out. Humidity was at 60. I wet the membrane and worked her out. It was all stuck to her feathers. Had to wash her bottom because she had pooped. Wrapped her in a warm rag and dribbled some warm honey water in her beak a few times and popped her back in the incubator. She is hobbling around and peeping now.

Another silkie egg has pipped. The incubator smelled like rotten meat so my daughter quickly cleaned it while I fed the little silkie and filled the reservoir. I candled the others and one was obviously dead. The other two besides the pipped one were still moving.
Just a waiting game now.

It's hatching day!!!!!

6 out of 6 Spitzhauben eggs hatched! The last Spitz chick hatched this morning, but its siblings decided to peck at its navel. I applied some Veterycin and am keeping the chick in the incubator for an extra day to see how it goes.

Today is day 21. The Serama & Spitz eggs have all hatched, and the Orpington eggs are just starting to pip.

Here are the tiny Seramas

Congratulations! They're all adorable! I think I'm going to cut back dramatically. I'm having a hard time selling off my extra chicks and I have way too many. I think I'll only be setting projects and turkeys for myself. I have started hatching eggs for other people though. I have about 60 eggs in my bator for other people. Maybe I'll just offer incubation services for other people :)

Incubation services are the way to go. All the fun of hatching with none of the pressure of selling!

I haven't advertised any chicks yet. The few chicks I sold were to former customers wanting more chickens or referrals from former customers. My BIG hatch in the schools will be April 30-May1st. I'm a bit nervous because I'm doing 4 schools at the same time. It's easier to integrate chicks when they're the same age, but i could end up with a lot of chicks. My son's 4H project is to compare incubators, so the hatch results will also be used for his data. (Brinsea, Hovabator, Incuview, and home-made cooler-bator) This is the "real" hatch we've been looking forward to and also the last one we planned.

I had a broody call duck on eggs. I knew 2 eggs were a little behind, but I left them with her anyway. Of 12 eggs, she hatched 10 last week. One of the delayed ones quit early on, so I was left with one egg. Of course I had to pop it in the bator. Now I have a lone duckling that hatched today. Hopefully I can give it to her in a few days, once it can keep up. One died after a few days, failed to thrive I guess, and I found 2 dead this morning after a cold snap last night.

Aww! So adorable! I'm not a duck person but calls are hard to resist :)
