Incubators Anonymous

Well, here's something I have definitely never encountered...I got two different types of chicks. The egg from 11/10 hatched a chipmunk-looking chick, the egg from 11/12 hatched a blue/black chick, the egg from 11/14 hatched a chipmunk chick, and the egg from 11/15 hatched another blue/black chick! What the heck? I'm guessing the blue/black babies are from my BCM cockerel, and I guess the chipmunk would be my Bielefelder...I didn't know it was possible for them to be mixed like that, though. How did every other baby have a different dad? So weird! Guess these babies are gonna have to find new homes, since I can't keep any that aren't gonna be part of my breeding program. Even though I'd love to keep one of the olive Egger babies, and I'm curious to see what the Bielefelder cross babies will look like. Oh well. At least I know my NYD hatchalong babies will be pure. And, it looks like my Sussex babies from this hatch are pure. Only had one of those hatch so far, though. Got 2 more BW babies pipped, one more Sussex pipped, and waiting for the other 2 Sussex to pip. I'll post a pic in a second....

So just one hen? A BW Am? The alternating days are interesting! Are the chicks bearded?

Sorry for 50 questions.... lol

Lol, that's ok. I've got even more questions than that! Yes, just one hen. She's the only blue layer that's currently laying. And yes, she is blue wheaten and an Ameraucana. And I'm not sure about the beards, they're still kinda damp, but 2 for sure look to have beards, one each of the blue/blacks and chipmunks.

Hi I'm Greg and currently we are running 2 farm innovators pro series digital incubators and a little giant. This is actually our first run but we seem to be doing pretty good. We have a big mixed flock consisting of 20 adult hens, 4 adult roosters, 2 adult guineas, 6 adult female ducks, and 6 adult drakes. We also have some chicks that were hatched by 2 of our flock and currently 3 ducklings and 5 chicks that we hatched. I kinda jumped into incubating with no clue of what to do but I've got a pretty good set-up now lol. Our next run should be much more fruitful and we will be starting it around new year. We are trying to hatch as many as possible before spring so that we can start selling.

Welcome Greg! Looks like you've got an abundance of boys lol. Sounds like most of our stories. We all just dive head first in to hatching and become very quickly addicted to it. If you really want to join the fun, there's a New Year's Day hatch a long going on. I'll have to go find the thread link for you but a bunch of us are setting eggs this Monday so that they hatch on New Year's Day :)

Here's some pics!
The one on top here is the most recent hatch, the Speckled Sussex. The other is one of the blue/blacks:

So, there they are! Hoping the other 2 Am crosses come out soon!

So cute! I love new babies! I think that's really interesting the different colors your getting. I'm definitely betting on the BCM roo. Do any of them have feathered legs? If your Marans has feathered legs that is. ..

The little quail spent most of the morning sleeping, recovering from their hard work hatching but this afternoon, they're waking up and becoming more alert. One has been following Holly the serama around, trying to wiggle under her, one was running as fast as its little legs could carry it to the food dish to peck around, and the last one went running full speed to the water for a drink but almost choked on it...I'm assuming that was his first drink lol

Thanks, @Auroradream26 !! I love them. And no, my boy doesn't have feathered legs, which makes it that much more difficult to tell. And the dominant peacomb on all of them tells me absolutely nothing, lol. But now that the 5 Am crosses that have hatched have dried off a bit, I can tell you they do all have beards, so there's that. Also, got my 2nd speckled Sussex baby just a minute ago...looks pure just like the other one, so that's a relief. Can't wait til the New Year's hatchalong so I can get some REAL BW Ameraucanas!!! Just waiting on 3 more eggs, one of which is already pipped. Fingers crossed for my first 100% hatch!!!

I just saw this...oops! Welcome, Greg! And yes, you should definitely join the hatchalong! It's a blast, and a must for the true addict, lol.
