Incubators Anonymous

Well that is what we are here for to give each other support right :thumbsup

I know what you mean I have to sit on my hands all the time and I have already hatched out ducks , geese , guinea & over 100 chicks this year but I still have to hold myself back and let nature take it's course and hope the incubator will hold up ..... :D

I know! Whenever I walk past the bators, I pick up the flashlight andtake a look. Don't know what I qm expecting to see, dancing eggs? I just can't resist! What is it that draws us in? Especially when we know they are no where cls to hatching!

Nice to know I'm not the only one who stares at eggs. It doesn't help that we made an incubator using light bulbs as a heat source. They flash on & off throughout the day just calling us to watch.

Oh now that is so funny as I have to walk into a room that is used for nothing other then storage and the incubator and I find myself also grabbing the flash light and looking in as though I was hepatized to do so several times a day with out thinking about it .....

mine just got filled up with 16 more eggs but they are quail and according to my husband they don't count...BTW he is such an enabler 3 bantam started laying this weeks so i have 5 eggs,I said i was going to use them to trade as mixed breeds aren't really my thing.he told me to incubate them to see if they were fertile, I have 40% Roo's they are fertile..
of course could be fun
Roo"s are 3 barred Cochin bantams,2 partridge Cochin bantam, 2 buff Brahma bantam's an EE, an Colombian wyandotte
hens are the same..I know one was an EE, I suspect the other eggs came from the Colombians as they have been squatting for weeks and their boy is one of the top roo's..

Sounds interesting. How did you get 5%?
I will have to try washed and dipped in vinegar. Did you use regular vinegar or did you use something like Braggs? If the vinegar removes some of the brown from a brown egg, I might have pure white eggs to put in the bator. LOL My eggs are shades of tan, some so light I call them blush.

I used regular apple cider vinegar. The lovely thing is that it is already at a 5% solution straight out of the bottle. Says so right on the label. The easiest source of Vitamin C is Fruit Fresh. Unless they have changed their ingredients it is powdered Vitamin C aka ascorbic acid. In that case it would take some calculation to make the solution the proper 5%. That was another reason that I ran with the vinegar I already had instead of buying the Fruit Fresh. I haven't made a proper measured solution from a powdered chemical and water since I had Organic Chemistry over 30 years ago.

If I ever decide to do it, it will probably take a week of research to find the instructions for making a 5% solution. Well Ask.com can probably spit out the answer for me in about 2 minutes. It will be a week of poking at an unused part of my brain to understand the directions again.

One thing that the vinegar does help with on the super dark eggs: Because it takes off the brown the eggs are easier to candle!

My mom and I will look at the eggs (not even in the incubator) and coo over the lovely shape and colors. My husband looks at us like he might call the guys with the white coats with the long sleeved jackets for us. You know the ones that tie in the back!

All you incubator experts: How detrimental is it to have a power outage of about 2-3 hours where the temps drop to 85 at day 5? We had a thunderstorm while I was at work. Currently trying to get the temps to level back out.

Thanks!

You are possibly fine. I'm not certain about day 5. On days 7-18, it has been shown that cooling periods can actually improve hatch rates and vigor in the chick. Brinsea has incorporated a cooling period into its incubator programs.

Thanks for the response. My incubators are borrowed from a friend who in the past has done loads of hatching. They do their job but the fanciest thing on them is they do have turners. Any tenp adjustments come from me!I have hatched before but never had to deal with the power outage. I know eary development is a critical time but I agree, I think well be okay.
