Can anyone tell me if you can tell if your chick is alive after cracking open an egg???? I'm up to day 23 with my incubator and still no hatchlings!!! It's my first time so I'm very anxious to have at least one hatch - but not counting on it at this stage lol. I decided in all my wisdom to crack open an egg as I figured they must be dead. When I opened it there was a fully grown chick inside. Is there anyway of knowing if he/she was alive or dead when I opened it???? I didn't see any movement from the chick.........I had a power outage for 6 hours on day 20 so I'm thinking that this may be the reason why i have had none hatch......please help - I'm a first timer

I am so sorry for your loss! They could still be alive try candling them with a bright flashlight in a dark room to see if there is any movement.Sometimes you get late quiters and with the power out it could have died.Sometimes they can take longer to hatch also wouldn't give up just yet!!!

Oh, I was told it was the tomatoes too. (and potatoes and peppers, etc.)
Speaking of planting along the runs, I was thinking of planting some cucumber vines. I could pick the top half and the chickens could eat the bottom half. =D
I googled again to just make sure..just no green tomatoes red ones are fine... well i did that the chicken ate the bottom and killed the plant..I did plant some pea's along their run witch is the back side of my garden just for them, and some kale..

I did the same thing with apples. After I was done I ended up with 4 full gallon bags of cut up apples and 1/2 gallon. It took me ours to do all that. Then I started baking and so far I have made 5 pies and 6 cakes. I still have a full gallon bag and part of another. I got a recipe off the internet called Uncle bob's cake.

If it was alive it would attempt to breath for about a minute before dying if it was too early. I did that by accident earlier this year when I thought the eggs were dead. So I put the rest of them in the incubator and got 2 to hatch out. One more tried but was upside down and drowned.

Oh, I wonder if kale could be planted just inside the run (to give them something low to munch on) and then the cukes could be planted just outside the run and trained to climb the fence....
Just thinking out loud. Maybe I'll do peas instead of cukes.

It would be obviously alive if it's not dead. It would move, at least when you stimulate it (I didn't want to say poke, maybe nudge would be a better word, but just touching it may not get a response). Also, as someone else already said, it would try to breath, at which time you would see movement too. There's no mistaking a live chick for a dead one, really (unless it's that close to being dead already and there's nothing that can be done by that point).
I'm sorry for your loss!!!

I'm super excited!!! Someone I ran into wants chicks and is willing to pay $4 a chick for as many as I can hatch! She has already paid for 20!!! My husband compares this to someone giving an addict more dope lol I love incubating!!!!

Clearly he picked the right analogy for this thread.
