Incubators Anonymous

Is it to late in the year to start incubating eggs? I'm in Indiana by Louisville ky.

As long as you have a warm area to brooder the newly hatched chicks no...

I had cleaned and put my incubators away for the year sometime last month after my last late season peas chicks hatched... Felt funny unplugging the incubators as they have been running literally 24/7 since spring, with pea chicks, Guineas keets or chicken chicks hatching pretty much every week, I don't think a week went by this summer where something wasn't hatching... Needless to say everyone in the house missed it so we brought one of them back out this week and tomorrow morning we are going to set a half dozen blue Easter Egger eggs we collected this week...

Me either! So I keep going! Lol

You mean you are supposed to STOP incubating eggs? Nobody told me that!
Hmmm....nope......I don't think anyone should ever stop incubating

Thanks all for the advice on packing and shipped eggs. I am fairly new to trying shipped eggs so trying to figure out the best way to go about it when I am ready to try again! I guess I just have to keep in mind that shipped eggs are a gamble

Just a bummer because I get them for my super broody bantam cochin and its so sad when they don't hatch out

Isn't there anywhere close you can get eggs from?
I know someone in your area. If you want, I can PM him for you and see what comes of that? LMK. =)

As far as I know there is no such thing as "too late in the year to start incubating eggs". But I live in the Deep South, so...

I would say set them, as long as you're going to be able to keep them warm when they hatch.

Maybe, this thread should be called hatching enablers. lol

You're not, she's new. It's okay, Bazy, set all the eggs you want and just keep setting.

I just got eight eggs shipped (they were from a friend).
The postal carrier tipped the box while I was standing there. I (jokingly obsessively) said, "Don't tip that, it's my hatching eggs." She said she'd read that and just kept tipping it.

One had an obviously loose air cell. The rest looked okay, the air cell is hard for me to see b/c of how I have to hold the flashlight to candle and how small my hands are, etc. Anyway, I waited until morning to set them.
I candled on day 3 (Friday night). It looks like all the aircells were loose; although none of them were actually detached. There are two I can't see through well, so I'm holding out hope for those two. Otherwise, only the one with the obviously loose air cell looks like it's developing (but it might be developing a blood ring). IDK. I kind of candled again last night (day 4), but I did it in the living room with the lamp on. Tonight, I'll take them into the girls bedroom (or my bathroom) and candle them after dark. Hopefully, there are veins in at least some of them and hopefully the one keeps developing. I'm hoping for some pretty egg layers, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to find eggs locally.

I don't think the USPS takes it seriously when you write hatching eggs on the box. KWIM? I think they figure they're wrapped up well for a reason. I think that eggs shipped for eating are treated better than eggs shipped for hatching. KWIM? Ugh! I'll stop complaining now. I'm sorry.

I'm just irritated b/c I know I should get a better development rate than one out of eight, or even three out of eight, from these eggs.
They were packaged well though.

You may be onto something there. Maybe we should request our eggs be marked "Fragile! Eggs!" Or maybe just a huge orange oval with black lettering that says"EGGS!" I mean how is the postman supposed to know what a 'HATCHING EGG' is anyway? They probably think eating eggs are more valuable than hatching eggs....wouldn't you if you didn't know anything about chickens?
