I wonder if DH would understand the "accidental" part?

My Husband doesn't understand how the fertile eggs "accidentally" found their way under the broody hen, since he saw me checking each yolk like a mad scientist for fertility for weeks in advance of her going broody, and also saw me stashing them in a cool back room so they would remain viable, taking extensive notes throughout the process...
Doesn't he know these things just 'happen'???

Of course, I mean how on earth could eggs just 'some how happen" to find their way into your incubator?

It's one of the greatest mysteries in the world...and I hope it never gets solved!

ok... just got 2 batches of eggs in today. good news and ... i don't know news.

the dorking eggs (off ebay) look EXCELLENT! a few loose air cells but not badly, just looks like the membrane separated from the shell a bit on the edges of the air cell. only one the air cell is all small bubbles that go clean around the egg.

now the EE eggs i got, one was leaking badly and stunk to high heavens

(but not broken even after I threw it toward the horse pasture, and the second time INTO the horse pasture!) and sloshed badly when jiggled (before i launched it). but at least it didn't leak on the other eggs... and of all the rest of the eggs, one has teeny bubbles going all the way around, the rest have damaged air cells like i mentioned on the dorkings. most worse than the dorkings had. i think someone played football with the box or something. so I have my doubts about viability but we'll see...

the marans eggs should get here tomorrow I think.

:fl

is it even worth trying with the eggs that have the small bubbles rolling around?

Hmm... I'm thinking that you could let them rest in egg cartons tonight, and check tomorrow to see if the air cells have merged at the top.

I've heard of unattached ones producing healthy chicks. I'm glad your dorkings look good!

I'm not planning on setting until my marans eggs get here (tomorrow hopefully) so tomorrow evening at best, lunch friday most likely. (to let the marans rest some too).

I'm also going to number each one and keep a log on them for future reference. may take pics of the candling too, or video... then i can compare good/loose/bubbles in the future to know what's what. i really need a 'real' candler too, my flashlight i used to use has disappeared. hubby's got another LED one at the shop he doesn't use because the on/off button kept falling off LOL so he's giving me that one to try.

I'll also have a scale to weigh them on soon too, tho it doesn't do me much good if they don't develop in the first place.

So I got most of the floor done on the converted coop. Need one more piece of wire. Cut some plywood for the place in the side where I raised the roof so it would slant. Painted them, and the other pieces of wood I added. Made the frame for the door, but still need to cut the plywood for the door. Progress!
Tonight I told DH that three more quail hatched today. "What are you going to do with all these quail?" Keep some, and sell some. I say, but no specifics on numbers.:-D
