Yeah with all the crosses that makes sense. You should definitely be able to tell the Legbar, Rhodebar, Marans, and orps from the others at least. I also use the upright egg cartons and it works really well.

"Should" being the operative word.

I've looked a billion chick pictures, so I think I should be able to tell them apart, but I'd rather be know than not know. The pictures I've found of LC orp chicks look an awful lot like white leghorn chicks. Are they darker than the light yellow leghorn chick?

You don't even want to know what an addict I am!! I also have 'bator envy. A close chicken lady friend just got the "Trump Tower" of cabinet incubators (I have two humble styro 'bators) which not only turns and regulates humidity and temp but cools periodically like a mother hen would.

i'd suggest lids for your baskets... chicks are energetic little things after being cooped up in an egg. they'll hop out of those baskets.

I am concerned about that, but I couldn't come up with what do do for lids.

Some people make custom baskets with lids out of plastic canvas from craft stores.

My hardware cloth won't lay flat, it got stored wonky, I meant to look for the plastic needlepoint canvas last time I was in town but I forgot. If I can find it do you think I can add it to the baskets with out disurbing the eggs too much? Or should I just do it for next time?

I use baskets for ALL my hatches. I have so many breeds that look alike, I need to know who is who. BTW has anybody found a video on toe punching chicks? I just can't figure it out.... so TINNY and such a BIG punch. I can't figure out how to get in that little webbing. I am thinking of clipping the webbing just seems easier to make the V cut than a hole.

Here are my baskets. You can make a basket out of that needle point canvas. I use that for dividers in my baskets.

Is there a tread on hatchers? I know there are a million of incubators and brooders but what about hatching?? Thanks
