depends what they're asking for it... even if it's gently used it's still used, thus no warranty or anything, so should be priced accordingly.

ok i'm bummed... orderd 25 chicks from mcmurray that were supposed to get here monday...
monday came and went, tuesday came and went, still no chicks.
got a call this afternoon, the box got there, but they were all dead...

BUT! mcmurray is doing me right, and replacing them for me to ship out this saturday. 8) cross fingers usps doesn't lose them again...

10 gold laced, 10 partridge bantam cochins and 5 silver grey dorking pullets. plus an extra freebie. hope it's something friendly or edible. LOL

I am in need of some hatchaholics opinions!! I have the opportunity to purchase a gently used 2 year old (4-5 hatches total) Brinsea 20 Advanced EX. I don't know the person who is selling it, and I would have to go out on a limb and buy it and have it mailed to me. I currently have a Hovabator 1588 that I purchased new last year... Do you really find that the Brinsea's are worth the money?

I personally wouldn't, but I suppose it would depend on how good of a deal you are getting. I've had great hatches using my HB Genesis, and I've also had great hatches using an LG Still air. Prior to that I would have considered getting something more high tech, but I wouldn't spend more than $100 for only a 20 egg capacity, and I don't even hatch every week. However, if I were to get a Brinsea I would want the most recent model and this one is 2 yrs old so that's something to consider. Still, I would probably pass just based on the small capacity.

Lockdown today! Here's what I came up with for baskets

What is the reason for separating them? Are they breeds that will be difficult to distinguish from each other? The only thing I would be thinking of is that in a few of the spaces there is hardly any room for the chicks newly hatched to "hang out", which means they will probably be climbing all over the unhatched eggs, which personally drives me bonkers but may not be a big deal to some. Sorry if I missed it in a previous post, I'm just not clear on the reason for the baskets. Looks very neat and orderly though!

There are a couple different reasons for separating them. Yes, they are all different breeds and I want to be sure I know which is which. Some are my own backyard crosses, so I'm not sure what they will look like.

On Saturday these should hatch:
6 White Leghorn x EE
6 Rhode Island White x EE
2 Rhodebar
1 BCM x EE
2 LC Orps

on Monday, these should hatch
2 White Leghorn x EE
3 Rhode Island White x EE
1 Legbar
1 Black Birchen Marans

Also, since it's a staggered hatch I wanted to be able to reach in an quickly remove the hatched ones if I want to. I figured picking up a little basket would be quicker than grabbing each chick individually.

It's the first time I'm hatching upright, in the cartons, so they are pretty close together. The two marans eggs are kind of scrunched, but to be honest, I don't think they'll hatch. They seem to "glow" when I candle them, but I wasn't willing to pull them.

I had a bigger basket for the six leghorn eggs but it was too tall and the heating element sat on it, so I punted with the smaller basket.

Mostly I wanted to try it and see if I like it. Last time I laid them on their sides really spread out and the hatched chicks still seemed to knock around the others, so I'm not sure convinced there's a benefit to spreading them all out. We'll see. Now I just have to wait.

Yeah with all the crosses that makes sense. You should definitely be able to tell the Legbar, Rhodebar, Marans, and orps from the others at least. I also use the upright egg cartons and it works really well.
