me too!

Ok, seeing as how I've been working my way through this thread for the past week (currently on post four thousand-and-something) while I waited on my first batch of eggies to hatch....it's definitely time for me to officially join IA! :)
I'm only on my first hatch, but I'm already hopelessly addicted! I'm the proud mama of Bowie, an incredibly sweet and sexy little Polish roo, and his flock of Australorp and Red Star wives. I was given a Farm Innovators forced air bator, brand new in the box, so naturally I had to break it in with a batch of my own eggs! I knew from seeing them in the skillet at breakfast every morning that they were mostly fertile. On Oct. 13, I set 15, of which 4 were non-starters and 2 were early quitters. That left 9 looking good going into lockdown day before yesterday. Today is day 20, and I have 2 Bowie kids out and 3 more pipped. I'm hoping the other 4 are still doing ok in there....I have no way of knowing at this point!

Here's Bowies' firstborn, Ziggy! He/she hatched at 1:30 this afternoon. He's out of one of the Australorps. I was really surprised that he came out nearly white!

Here are Ziggy and his/her sibling, Rebel Rebel (2nd one out at 4:30 pm.) Rebel is out of a Red Star, and is more of a golden color.

I am very curious to see what color these kids turn out! Daddy is Buff laced, and the mamas are red and black....will be interesting! These babies are for a friend of mine who wants a few laying hens and I'm keeping what she doesn't take. They are just sweet pets that have a forever home with me.

I have, by the way, already ordered my next batch of eggs. They are Lavender Ameracaunas, to be sent on 11/12. After that, I will get some Polish eggs, as I would like to raise those two breeds. See, I have no intention of stopping. :p

Cheers,
Katja

I hatched some orps from my choc roo......yeah! when I left I had 2 choc pullets 3 black roos and 1 that looks different......mauve I think. not sire what mauve looks like but it kinda looks silver almost lavender but I can see a little brown too.....so if choc it is a mauve pullet.

I had 16 more rhodebars hatch too 9/7 Pullets to roos

looks like a great hatch! now what to do with all these rhodebars pullets.....

Well, I have 8 happy Peeps and egg #9 is late but I THINK I saw movement tonight when I candled it, but no internal pip as far as I can see....I will let it stay in the bator for a couple more days just in case....tonight is the end of day 22.

This is Fashion, one of my favorites. He/she hatched out last night and I have no idea what to expect when feathers come in, but this color is just yummy! And what an adorable face!!!

DMRippy, you will like this. The SBEL roo I hatched from your eggs fathered 27 eggs from 10 different hens before we rehomed him. And guess what.....he was only 19 weeks old!!!!!!! We had to rehome him for several reasons. 1) Crowed all the time.....we have renters and they don't pay to get woken at 3:30 in the morning. 2) He was 'getting' everything! Hormone city! He was even getting the ducks! Male or Female! My husband just thought he was a pervert! hahaha.... I say he was every man's fantasy.....so many hens, just jumped from one to the next! LOL. My husband even claims he saw this rooster have a "go" at the hole in the stump! Anyway, the renters didn't know what to make of all that love play! but, 3) he did jump one of the renters legs.....that is just a no-no so he had to go.....but not before he fathered all my chicks!

Ok. My hatch is done. Hatched 7/11 bantam Seramas for my friend (eggs from Floriday) and 22/27 of my own eggs. 5 ended up being NN! Some will be frizzled! And the roo carried the blue egg gene so I am excited about the egg color possibilities! Love those colored eggs!

Here is an interesting observation about this hatch.

I had decided to do the egg carton hatch. I had two rows of eggs in cut down cartons. Plus 3 on the floor. All the air sacs facing me. so I could see all the pips easily. One row on each side of the bator. One row was closer to the wall of my room and one was on the side of the open room. The eggs in the carton on the back side near the wall all hatched out Thur and Fri. The eggs from the carton on the side of the open room are hatching now (Saturday). Apparently, the back side of the incubator near the wall stayed warmer than the front side and that is the reason for the time difference....even within that small space! Very interesting!

Also, the carton method was great! No rolling around. Eggs all stayed in the right position and zipped perfectly!

Their is a song I learned at Girl Scout Camp an eon ago. I haven't found a midi file for it so you could hear the tune but think Dixieland Jazz with the verses done slow and dirge like going to the funeral and the refrains happy and lively (like When the Saints Come Marching In).

Until that Rooster Came Into Our Yard

We had a chicken. No eggs would she lay.

THAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME....... just cracked me up! and I have a headache since I am TRYING to get what the kids had.... so far I am keeping it at bay but I may succumb :}-

Glad you got some chicks from him. Did he sire any ducks? hahahahahahahah

I too have some BREEDS that hatch before others for some reason. My Rhodebars and BR are usually the first to hatch. Marans are last for some reason. I don't care as long as they hatch :)

we need pics! What color was he? White or Barred?

This was the dad, Roo Guy. He had the Crested Cream Legbar dad and the White Leghorn mom. You can see a tiny little bit of his crest he inherited from his dad. The hen on the right is also one of your SBEL. She had the Ameraucana dad X leghorn. She hasn't laid yet. The duck in the photo is the one this boy always harassed.

Some of the chicks. Notice cute little naked neck in back.

They aren't as crowded as they look...just tried to get them all together for picture!

Dad again.
