Sigh, I just can't wait till I get to the point where I have a good grasp on all this and get a rhythm/system going. All the conflicting info on the incubation process is horrible, haha.

I hear that!

This is the exact reason I started to educate myself with scholarly articles/abstracts/studies and stuff and not hearsay, as I was going insane with confusion! This is why I share almost everything I learn in the hatching 101 article and I take time to add those trials and abstracts links as well, they are very important back up information.

this is probably the most frustrating part of forums. everyone has an opinion.

Sally and I agree on just about everything - because we both research the heck out of every subject. Sally (who why BYC has not given an educator badge to is beyond me) not only researches them but posts them in her https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...detatched-shipped-eggs/26900_50#post_13543346

I offer a lot of information here and some probably say "there he goes again" but there is nothing that i post here that I cannot back up with scholarly written articles or industry advice. I dont have to verify anything sally says because I know she is not going to postself perpetuating myths and has research to back her advice as well.

you will see a lot of "well i ,,,,,," and" I dont bother to do that" and i got 6 out of 7 shipped eggs to hatch. ask them what happened when they tried to hatch 600? Professional scientific research does. or ask them did they get 6 from 7 every hatch.

evry egg is valuable to me. every egg can make or break having a breed added and a failed hatch can set me bacj 6 months to a year. if something improves my hatch 15% I will surely do it.

its up to you whether you take the time to look something up or choose ask in a forum and its ultimately up to you whether you follow the advice of research or decide you are happy with a short cut or two and thus dont mind paying the price.

Hello, maybe you can help me.

This is the first time i'v incubated eggs so i am a complete novice. I have 7 eggs now 10 days into incubation. I started with 10 but one was probably infertile and two died early on. The rest are all moving about like crazy and getting bigger every day.

About the air cell - Is there any pictures of the stages of development i can look at to see if the air cells are the right size? I think they are quite big but i don't know what it's supposed to be like. I estimate it's about 1cm. My eggs are in a still air incubator - just an old cupboard with a light bulb - I'v got one dish of water in there for humidity, but maybe it's not enough. The air cells have always looked big since i first candled them on day 6 but i don't know what they are supposed to be like so i have nothing to compare it too.

I agree whole heartedly. I've just about given up posting the same thing day in and day out, because nobody seems to be listening to what you (I) say... I haven't hatched as much as you have Oz, but I do have several thousand chicks 'under my belt'.

were they shipped eggs or locally bought? shipped eggs, the air cells will appear much larger than a local egg because the membrane has been disrupted somewhat (some worse than others).

also, what humidity are you keeping them at?

They were bought locally. I don't have a humidity guage so i don't know what it's at. I'm going to go buy one though, maybe i can do that just now....

Quote:
normally I would recommend dry incubation, unless you live in a desert climate or very high elevation. having a hygrometer will help tho when it comes time for lockdown so you know your humidity has increased. it's not so much about the actual numbers, but an increase from dry incubation to an acceptable range for the chicks to hatch easily.

well here they are! my chicks that got turned off for a while on day 18!!

Blue Laced Red Wyandottes from Donna (5/6 hatched)

Coturnix quail (17/22)

Easter Eggers (6/7)

Red bantam Cochins (3/3)

Silver Grey Dorkings 7/8 (but 2 turned out to be mixed with Wyandotte and aren't in the picture.)

Here are my blue andalusian mixed chicks

so I made a hatcher, to move my eggs into tomorrow night. Do I need a fan it it? its not air tight, is that gonna provide enough air> heat source is a heat light at the top through a screen
