Incubators Anonymous

Newbie to incubating here. I just set up the incubator, got the eggs in and thought I had it set just right for the temp. I came back two hours later, and the temp was at 110. Will this have killed my eggs or so you think they will be ok?

First have you calibrated your thermistor to make sure it is correct and what kind of incubator are you using as I do not believe I could even get my heat that high .........

I purchased this incubator in 1997 so it has worked every year from that time and a few times has hatched 13 different hatches a year so it ran non stop for several years and yes it has paid for it's self more them once ......

Now if you notice the white little box on top of the bator is the digital thermometer and nice big numbers for easy reading at some distance and it is an egg thermometer even better I found out .....

The black box is a dehumidifier with nice big numbers for easy reading .....

For you youngsters the seconded thing to go is your sight and for the life of me I cant remember what the first thing is ....

Alright if you can see the egg in the middle with the T for top that is the egg thermometer and the white wire goes to the white box .......

Left the black wires are for the dehumidifier as it is very easy to over humidify and this will take care of that ..........

The hand towel folded in the back is to get wet with warm not hot water and yes one in front and one in the back ........

Half of these egg's are my guinea egg's and I am really hopping to get a fair hatch as a bob-cat got my guinea hen after only three days of sitting and I had to recover them and put in the incubator but half are showing signs of healthy growth

Them item's were purchased on e-bay and worth the price and the egg's come in different sizes for quail , chicken and geese as I remember but I would defiantly check

gander,

I notice you have the air cells (I am assuming) marked. What day do you mark them and what are you looking for with the markings?

Good question,,,,, Day's 7, 14, 21, 25 for guinea, ducks and geese ......

Day's 7, 14, 18 for chickens ...

I am looking for the development of the embryo and the dehydration in the egg itself and the placement of the air sack as you will notice several od the guinea egg's in the photo are not in the correct place ......

My kids get to watch the development of the embryos and after all of these years they still get excited every time

And it also look's like I am doing it correctly when I take photos of my incubator

Funny how the most basic things work for a long time and after pricing out a new one as the fan was working intermittently so I called G.Q.F. and got a price quote and was told it would be three time the price I paid for the entire setup and this time I would only be getting the incubator with forced air so I took the fan apart and blow it out with a can of air I got at the computer store and put a little oil on the moving parts to the fan and reassembled the incubator and it was back to normal and no G.Q.F. has changed the style so I could not get a replacement fan .......

So as long as it is treated with care it will last a wile and yes it has hatched Quail, ducks, geese they are a trick though, pheasant, chucker, doves, chick's, and for some reason I believe flies as they do seem to be in there during the summer but maybe they have an entrance I don't know about ....

The funny thing is I have to change something if I move or the time of year ..... Always some sort of adjustment .....

first things first, make sure your thermometer is right. second, give the incubator a good 3-4 days running at a stable temperature before adding any eggs (it may take several days to get the temp right) and lastly, once the eggs are in it, DO NOT ADJUST THE TEMPERATURE! it'll fluctuate some while the eggs are warming up, but it will stabilize, if it was stable before.

for more in-depth instructions, here's an article I wrote for a teacher who had no success in prior attempts. she followed the instructions and had a successful hatch of 10/12 shipped SFH eggs.
