Incubators Anonymous

I'm now up to day 24 and still no chicks?? When would the last possible day be before I give up on my eggs??? I had the power out on day 12 for 6 hours and day 20 for 6 hours. So I'm thinking that my eggs are no good!! Is there a way of checking??? It's nearly killing me to see no chicks as this is my first time!!

have you tried to candle the eggs? that's the best way I know how. I would assume that your eggs have died, but im no expert.
After candling your eggs and your still unsure , put one in a a Ziploc baggie and carefully break it open, usually you can tell what week your little chicks may have quit.
Good luck

My 3 little 3 week old silkies look so funny all alone in my big 4'x4' brooder! LOL But, I will not complain that I sold their 15 EE friends Saturday!! Just means more room to hatch more babies!!!!

If I can get the Wellies and Jersey Giants in the outside hut to grow faster I can move them to the big bird coop and then the Silkies outside. My brooder would be free and I could hatch more eggs.

My last batch hatched July 15. My incubator's been sitting empty in the living room for over a month. My daughter's 4H is done, our coop is full, & we have no reason to hatch more. So sad....

On vacation, we drove by someone selling fertile Lavender orpington eggs for $15 a doz. I can't tell you how much I wanted to bring some aboard. (I spent more than 2xs that when I had them shipped!) If I only had a good reason.......

Faraday 40 I'm in the same boat at the moment needing a good reason....... Incubator sitting on work top just looking at me..... And someone local has eggs.... You only live once!!!!!!!! :jumpy

That is so nice of you...Thank you so much! I just started my school year(I am a teacher) so maybe once things get going I can try some more eggs

Beginning of school year= CRAZY

My mom was a teacher; her mother helped us out a lot at the beginning of the school years. =)
I think getting more eggs once things settle down is a good idea!!!

I'm super excited!!! Someone I ran into wants chicks and is willing to pay $4 a chick for as many as I can hatch! She has already paid for 20!!! My husband compares this to someone giving an addict more dope lol I love incubating!!!!

Well, we're here to enable you too!!!

Clearly he picked the right analogy for this thread.

He doesn't even know about this thread lol He knows I get on here and "talk to chicken people" lol

That's the extent of my DH's understanding of BYC.

I agree with @Jnkbtd08 , candle. There's an article on "Assisted Hatching". Read over that and then, when you're ready (when you feel like it's been long enough), begin egg-topsies.
I'm sorry to say that, but the truth of the matter is that the power outages could have either delayed the development of the chicks and they might hatch late, or it might have killed them. I suggest using the article, b/c she'll tell you want to look for to have a pretty good idea of what's going on inside the eggs without necessarily opening them up. KWIM?

Maybe, you need a small birds coop outside???
big_smile.png
Then you could get to that hatching sooner, right?

Same here. =( Hope you make up, er, I mean find a very good reason to hatch some more soon!!!
We'll help you come up with a good reason.....Hmmm......Need more eggs? Build another coop and you'll have a coop to fill......??? I'm tryin'!
