Incubators Anonymous

""""You can never have too many incubators & hatchers""" This is Not True----I had to move several styrofoam incubators(all with egg turners) to a storage building so I could get my Cabinet incubator and cabinet hatcher into my incubator room with the 5 other styrofoam incubators I kept in the room, but I will have to get a bigger room if I add the other GQF cabinet incubator and other cabinet hatcher I also got in storage----If I ever need them. LOL TO MANY INCUBATORS!!!

"OOOWEEEEWAHHHH" ( sound effects..sorry the best I could do, but I think you get it...)

the first Cochin that hatched this morning. 18 more eggs all started so it's going to be a long night with twin 5 yr old girls constantly watching the "warm box" to see if there are any birds out.

Congrats!

I hope all goes (or went) very well and everyone comes out of their eggs for you!!!

(And that your girls actually slept!!!)

Well we now have 4 chicks out and dry and a few more well on their way to being totally out. Thank god the kids are at school so I don't have to play chick police all day.

I KWYM. I homeschool...

<- That's me when it's time for the kids to go outside, after playing chick police all day. lol

Congrats on the new chicks so far.

You should try being chick police in a classroom while hatching!

Honestly, they're not so bad in a school setting. My own children have a more liberal interpretation of following the rules at home. Of course my daughter & I are the hatch-a-holics & get raccoon-eyed.

Yup, this is us. Me and my oldest and youngest enjoy hatching sooooooo much!!! I had one of my kids sit by the incubator and take pictures of the one that hatched last night. I now have literally about 50 pics on my phone of the same chick in almost the exact same position... Never again. But it's so egg-citing to watch them kick free, and you have to stand there and watch them or you miss it.

but when you get to see it...

Last night I went toned and figured they could just hang out in the bator til I woke up. Got up at 4 this morning and I had 5 dry chicks running round wrecking shop so I move em to the brooder. At 630 everyone else gets up and sees no chicks in the bator and goes nuts until they look in the brooder and realize I'd moved em. Got 3 Cochins with one egg hatching now. One barred rock. The rest are going to be 3 way cross mutts. They are out of barred rock hens and a cross roo. Good practice anyways.

I'm hatching mutts too. The hens are red sex-links and the roo is an EE with WL and GLW. I'm calling it practice for when we have purebred eggs to hatch, but really I just like having babies around all the time.

DH already knows that, but don't tell him. Saying it out loud is different than him already knowing on his own. KWIM?

The preschool eggs are hatching!!!

I've got a 48 egg unit and it's well built and simple to use. The temperature cal. And humidity are way off and don't work well at all. Same your money unless you have nothing better to do than check your bator every hr or so.

The last 10 chicks come home from the class room tomorrow! Here's a link to the thread for this hatch with a bunch of pictures if anyone want to see the overload of cuteness at my house and in the class room!

The chicks are mine.

some are my daughters 4h bantam Cochins she is super excited about them. They are super cuddly they climb right in your hand when you reach in!

A few parents have asked if they can buy some but when I asked if they knew how to care for chickens I pretty much got a how hard can it be? Kind of answer... So no. No you cannot buy my chickens! Lol I told them if they were really interested they should do research and check back in the spring when I hatch again.

The last set of chicks I sold all died bc the lady thought a rice pack and a blanket would keep them warm. She called me after they all died and asked why I sold her sick chickens... It took some talking to figure out she thought the heat lamp was too hot so she turned it off... Brilliant! But I don't sell chicks anymore bc of that.

You're brave to hatch your personal chicks in a preschool classroom. I'm glad you had a successful hatch. Some of my friendliest hens came from a classroom. They easily got accustomed to human interaction & being handled regularly.

I once had a clueless person from Chicago try to buy a chick. She called me because she got 2 "free" chicks from a tractor supply store on Mother's Day. They came with a small baggie of food which ran out after a few days. She tried to feed them tortillas & bread, but one died. The other cried like crazy, so she wanted another companion for it. Instead I gave her the name of a feed store in the city where she could buy supplies and learn more about her free pet. I find it hard to believe that a store would just give chicks away to people. Also, why would anyone simply take home a pet b/c it's FREE? There was no way I was going to let this strange lady near my baby chicks.

I think this was a learning experience for everyone involved! Taping the incubator lid down was KEY in the hatching process!

The day the chicks hatched no learning was done if it wasn't about chickens. I get away with hatching more chickens if I'm doing it for the kids!

This is how I feel about the parent that said, "Chickens can't be that hard. I just want one to run around the yard." when I asked if they knew how to care for them.... NOPE NOPE NOPE! Mine run around but they have Coops, water every where, free choice feed, and if they come to the back door they might get treats if I hear them yelling for me.
D.gif
Not to mention how to treat for mites, lice, or if they get hurt or sick how to diagnose and quarantine them. I have a kennel in the garage my daughter calls the "chicken hospital" when they get sick. The people who get animals "just because" just blow me away.
