Well yesterday was a big day! Found a clutch of eggs my new layers hide from me.... and BOTH olive eggers are laying and I think the other rock. Then today they all laid in one nest it was pretty! Then I saw the new blue egg! Only one hold out from that group. Was so excited

So I thought I would just check one more time and thought I would look in the babies nest box.... and low and behold there it was my first MARANS egg! at 20 weeks
ya.gif
So now I have to hatch some marans eggs... what roo???? So many to chose from!

Candled some eggs today. 3/4 Brahmas are growing, 5/7 Lav Am eggs growing, and

about Marans. I think I see 3 or 4 that are clear out of 9

But I have more coming when they start laying for her.

I did not really candle my eggs on the bottom rack but two that I looked at looked good. I have 8 more Rocks a week behind these eggs so I will check them all Sunday.

Good luck on your secret clutch!

You must have super-(wo)man eyes to see thru the marans shell! Hope the remaining eggs do well.

My BO is sitting on 13 mutt eggs. I didn't have the heart to stop the incubating at this point. Should be an eclectic mix as I have 3 types of roosters ( marans, hamburg, blk sexlink) and so many more hens than that! She went missing Monday morning. I searched around, mostly the wooded areas and a few possible nesting locations out of the way. Later DH searched. DH confesses he didn't think of looking in the barn. LOL But neither did I !

I was done with chicks for the season. THe youngest are about a month old and not getting out of the house soon enough!! LOL Need to get the turkey poults out of the house too!

Maybe tomorrow is a good day to go get the fertilized eggs from WHole Foods. I do want a few leghorns.

120 lumens flashlight helps but not much! Even with the lav am eggs they are hard to see anything in either. I give them all a good chance since I don't know what I am really doing.

Whole Foods has them too? I have a roo on hold for those babies.....

ok well some good and some disappointing news...

the 10 EE's are holding their own.
fl.gif

the 8 bantams are holding their own.

the 17 Dorkings are now 9. why would 8 quit between days 11 and 13? scattered thru the incubator, all with the same conditions... still have 9 going.
fl.gif

the marans were all scrambled.

so today i tossed 8 dorking eggs. hm. wonder why just them.
hu.gif

but on the plus side, i had room to put the eggs owl hoarded in the turner... 9 started, 2 were blanks. i think they were first eggs tho, since everyone's fairly new to laying. they were started around the 6th (ish) or so, some laid a day or 2 earlier but i don't think many were laid after she started brooding...

so because of the dorking losses, i'm not tossing the mutt eggs. at least i have a trio to get more eggs from now.

so yes, i plan on hatching more over the winter to make sure i have enough starter stock to work on over the summer.

Well yes, I suppose it is. But what were you supposed to do...let potential silkie chicks just DIE???
ep.gif
I think that it was very humane of you to help give those chicks the opportunity for life

Well, Owl's still sitting tight to the nest, even tho she gets booted off when the top hens want to lay (but they're sitting on the wooden eggs so they don't get cold LOL)... I'm debating whether i give her chicks from the first hatch, or second hatch now (the eggs she started incubating when she went broody...)

if i give her the second hatch, that means i can get the first bunch outside sooner possibly, since they'd have chicks their own age to mingle with. (maybe?)
