The end of the box was bashed, so I was afraid some were busted. Didn't candle the rest, just let them sit for 12 hours and put them in. Also bought more laying hens for eating eggs. Got a RIR roo for my production red hens. A good day all around.

Hatching quail can be additive. I ended up hatching a couple hundred & giving them away except for a few breeding groups I kept for myself & they have just started laying. Quail are so fast compares to chickens. I have been waiting months for my chickens to start laying.

THat completes that breeding group!!! Good for you. Seems like more people are wanting hatching eggs again.

Found more eggs deposited by the hens into the broody's nest! Found one of the hens squished in to lay! THe BA did not budge or hiss . . . . rather MORE, MORE, MORE.
She had 20 eggs under her! 20!!

I pulled her out to eat and drink while I quickly snanned for X's. I heard that ominous thunk--an egg cracking on the coop floor.

ANd I had checked for any eggs tucked between her legs. Really, I did!! Fortunately it didn't have an X and that egg and the other extras headed to the house. . ... and upstairs and into the incubator!!!

PS. THe cracked one headed to the kitchen for eating.

Well, it's started! my broodymomma hatched her first chick last night...
ya.gif

when i candled yesterday there were 4 or 5 internal pips, so we'll see how she does.

she's got all the eggs now, the other momma got relcocated (in her tub) to out under the deck...

Grey (indoor broodymomma) is potty trained of all things. she won't poop in her crate so every afternoon I take her outside, put her down near her favorite dust bath location and she does her thing then heads straight back to her nest. the other hen constantly poops on her nest.

so she's got one dud egg to sit on. if she'll stay broody long enough she may get some cochin and/or dorking babies when they hatch. if not she gets to be a free bird again.

ok well an update on broodymomma (aka Grey)...
went downstairs to feed the dogs this morning, and found this.
