it can... that's one reason i don't like using paper under the chicks. even paper towel... and i don't feed from a dish either but loose on a terry washcloth/rag for the first couple days (coarse enough to give traction, and durable enough to BLEACH THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF after.

DEEP bedding seems to help prevent it too. One of the chicks that hatched last batch had 'wonky' legs too, and i wrapped it loosely in a washcloth, and put down into a short cup (about 3" tall 3" wide brim) and by the time his yolk was gone his legs were strong enough to propel him out of the cup to go find food... can't say that would work for everyone but it did this chick...

Just put 30 more in the Bator. Buckeyes, Cochins, Speckled Sussex etc. Hatched out two baby polish tonight, way cute! Guy called who bought chicks a couple of days ago , wants more .:)

OK Here's what I did. I taped the legs in the right position. Although he keeps getting them un-stuck. He still is a strong little booger despite his "problem".

I have shavings in their tub, but what happened was, the other stronger little chicks started stratching the pine shavings away to reveal the slippery bottom of the tub. I had him and "PeeWee" seperated from the others, but they were upset about being seperated and knocked over the wall I had set up.

I put splay legs in a little saucer and then I took a plastic lid and cut a hole for his head. So he sat in that all day yesterday. But now as I sit here, he has made his way out of that and is trying to EAT!! Yeah! I have been hand feeding him and Peewee a applesauce/feed mush and peewee has been eating great, but this little guy hasn't. So I'm pretty excited that he's out pecking at the feed. (I have my feed on a cloth too. Unfortunantly he has weaseled out of his tape again and has the bad leg out to the side. One leg is strong and underneath him.

Crap! Any advice on keeping him in this stinkin' tape? He's strong, which I'm thankful for, but Ahhh!

Try using medical bandage tape.
Today I sold four dozen eating eggs, could have sold more if I had them. Fortunately, one of the black sex links is starting to lay, hope her sisters do the same. I also sold two boxes of chicks today, and move three batches of chicks down to the barn. I need to put more eggs in the Bator. Better go do that....

I'm using that white medical tape. I've just replaced it like 3 times already. But that's okay, it's working. It is becoming more straight today, and he is eating a bunch of food. So I'm glad for that.

I'm happy to report this morning that splay leg is walking pretty good. Not perfect, but definitely staying upright. And eating great!
