Incubators Anonymous

I have a incubator question for you all........

This is our first time using an incubator. The other night when we candled our eggs, the lid slipped and fell into the incubator and cracked (well sort of crushed) two of the eggs. Luckily, the two that were crushed were 2 of the 3 not developing but now there is egg yolk on the floor of the incubator. We are using a Brower Top Hatch, the floor that the eggs sit on is coated wire with small holes so the air can move completely around the eggs (sorry, I seem to be having a hard time explaining the flooring). Anyway, the yolk is still there, I called Brower and they said to leave it alone and continue with the rest of the eggs. I'm just curious what others may have to say. Should I attempt to clean it and risk loosing the rest of the eggs? Does the yolk being in there pose any possible problems for the rest of the eggs/chicks? I do not notice a bad smell so don't believe the eggs were rotten. Just looking for some input here. Thanks!

I would leave the yolk for now since it is not interfering with the functions. Eggs actually have a remarkable ability to prevent invasion of bacteria. Starting with the bloom on the outside. Inside the egg it has a number of anti-bacterial agents to defend the growing chick.IT's not a perfect system of course. Did any yolk get on the other eggs?? I had a hen break a few eggs while setting on the eggs ( another hen pushed in to lay) and all the eggs had yolk. I was advised to wash the eggs as the yolk will clog the pores. So I rinsed every egg and returned them to the hen. Had a very good hatch rate.

Hope this helps. Sorry about the broken eggs. :(

agreed, if the yolk got on the other eggs, rinse with warm to hot water briefly and put them back in the 'bator to dry and continue cooking.

the yolk in the bottom will dry out fairly quickly and won't be a problem.

Thanks for your replies. The eggs were on day 7 when they broke. The yolk did not get on any of the other eggs and I was able to move the other eggs away from that area. I guess we'll see around Feb 7! I do appreciate all the input.

Thanks!

ok just had to share this... turned around and looked in one of the quail tubs (yeah, they're still inside) and found this.
a few minutes later, I found this one...
then in the middle tub, it sounded like they were playing quail rugby or something. i turned around and saw this...

and before you think 'oh she edited that...'
NOPE! each egg image is the exact same size (white box drawn).
it REALLY is that much bigger!

the only problem with sticking it in the incubator... it's got a small hole on one side where someone pecked it.

Ouch! that had to hurt!

Got my new incubator today. So far the temp and humidity are rock steady and holding great right where they should be. Now the question is can I wait until the 12th to load it with eggs or should I start loading them early. So sad that I have no patience lol.

ok, well, figued since it was slightly cracked, i'd cook it. figured it wouldn't hurt the quiche recipe, i mean how much can 1 quail egg compare to 6 chicken eggs, right?

NO chance that sucker would have hatched... with 2 HUGE yolks in it (well huge in a "jumbo shrimp" kinda way).
how often do you see a first egg being a double yolker? besides, i didn't see a bullseye.
