I'm thoroughly disappointed right now...I had to call my 13 year old and tell him that when I candled his JG eggs that they weren't viable. He is so disappointed. We won these back in late June and the person just sent them last week. They were sent after I filed for a refund. I think that 4 weeks is long enough to wait when you're told they'll be there at a certain time. I was told there were extenuating circumstances that could not be avoided so, that is the reason for the long wait. The eggs were shipped on a Friday so, they sat, only the Good Lord knows where, over the weekend. When we got them, we candled and the aircells were just bubbles everywhere in some. They were also packed every which-a-way. So, we let them sit for 24 hours w/o any movement or touching or breathing or looking with hopes that they would come back together. Today, was a huge disappointment. They've been in since Tuesday so Wednesday was day one. There was not the first vein in all 10. I can usually tell by now if they're going to make of not. I had a feeling this would happen because I filled for the return. I'm giving them another couple of days. Maybe I'm wrong. I just have this gut feeling that I'm not. I've seen this before. Even if it's only been 4 days there should be something.
How am I supposed to know who is a reputable seller and who is not?
I'm sorry you didn't get any hatchlings from this shipment. Shipped eggs are a gamble--you may not have any hatch. I have good hatch rates, even when laid every which way in the box; and I've had one out of 12 hatch when packed with end up. I have had 1/6 turkey eggs dev and then it didn't hatch. I've bought 12 turkey eggs and none hatched.
THese were purchased from reputable BYC sellers. Shipped eggs are a gamble, BUT you can increase the odds if you know the longer the distance the better. For some reason the air plane shipping is better than a ride only by truck. Care of the hens is important and care of the eggs while collecting for shipment, and even then rough handling by the USPS can kill them all. I hve asked for non-machineable transport of my hatching eggs by the USPS and I can only confirm 1 box having traveled that way.
It is disappointing when the eggs don't develop. By the time you have them in hand there is no way to know the cause of failure to develop. THe seller may have sent eggs that are just fine and has other eggs that are developing in the incubator.
I personally buy only from BYCers. Still not a guarentee but I feel I have a better chance of success as I can read input by other customers.
So those of you that have bought eggs from me , please consider adding your opinion to my page. I work very hard to send fresh well cared for eggs. Even non-BYCers find me via BYC!
