Indiana 2010 Chickenstock-2011 NEWS!!

What color was what you got? I can't remember.... I was thinking that you didn't get a call, but when I went through my "inventory" that night sorting everybody out and separating what was mine from my neighbors, I did come up 1 short on what were his babies, but didn't think what you got was a color that was from him...lol

I got the taller yellow duckling in the smaller cage that was to your right, my left. The cage that you had the little Call duck with the injured bill. I believe you might have said it was a Swedish mix, but for the life of me, I don't remember what you said it might be mixed with! I don't know why Welsh Harlequin keeps coming into my head. Maybe someone was talking about them? I dunno. What I do know is that if this Call continues to be as sweet as she is right now, I'll be wanting some more from you next year! She's a little doll and already my mom's favorite. She likes the ducks better than the chickens, so I buy them for her. She was in heaven coming home with so many ducks yesterday. Oh boy, is my yard going to be nothing but mud come next summer, lol!

Chickycat, Clem hatched on March 26th. He's following the Silkie in him more than the Cochin in him, so he hasn't crowed yet, and likely won't for several more months. The White Silkie is 9 1/2 weeks old. I believe that batch hatched the middle of June. I really need to invest in a good software to keep up with the hatches. I write it down, but then someone inevitably moves the paperwork. I had quite a few hatches this spring and summer, and my memory is good, but not THAT good, lol! I hope they both settle in good for you.

They are settling in fine. Clem picked on the black Silkie mix at first, nothing serious, but they are okay now. The black Silkie mix seems really shy. My two Silkie chicks don't want to be held. As soon as I pick them up they leap back into the tub. Any suggestions? I brought the one out last night and it laid on my chest for about a half hour. So I guess I just need to handle them a lot? I really want these chicks I got to be tame and easy to handle.

birdsnbeesnseeds, how old is the black Silkie/Polish mix. I named it Ebony which will be good whether it is male or female. I just love it. So pretty.
I love all my chicks, I am thrilled.

Thanks to all that showed up! Kathleen and I were pretty much dead yesterday so sorry for not posting yet. We checked the post a few times but I still had some final cleaning up to do and Kathleen had a ton of canning to do as well as other stuff. We are feeling a bit more rested today. I think the highlights for me personally was the pig, and the Chicken Limo. Not to mention all of the wonderful people that showed. I actually got to meet some of you this year! As for pictures we have set up a photobucket account just for this year's chickenstock. We would appreciate everyone that would take the time to upload their Chickenstock photos please do so.

I can't believe I had to miss 'Chickenstock' again this year!. Pulled my back trying to get the riding mower out of a hole I got it stuck in. Duh!

Love reading all the posts and how much fun everyone had.

I just mentioned this tip from my mom on the Marans thread, mom was a former Persian Cat breeder and winner of the Lady Baresford ACFA Show back in the 80's. She had been on the first page twice in our Indianapolis Star's newspaper front page for her cats and had been on our local news too. She used Boric Acid on her White Persians eyes to clean out the tear ducts and make them look white. She suggested I use Boric Acid as a preventer of mites. Instead of using "SEVEN". If it is gentle enough to use near a cat's eye, we should have no issues with our birds. No one on the Marans thread seemed to be too interested even though they spent half a page talking about some tail mites that don't do well in our area. thought I would share this secret here too. I know MOTHERS KNOW BEST!

Yeah, the one with the bunged beak is a Swedish.....

Some of the ones in there were calls, and some were not.... I didn't think that you got a call out of there....but you might have, I don't know...lol I know that I only had 7 of the ones that were my neighbors and had started with 8, and I was like what happened to that one??? Cause I thought what you took were both mine...but I don't know. Suffice it to say, don't be sad if it is regular size and not call...lol...

If you can take a pic of them though I could probably verify what's what. lol

Chickycat, the Polish chicks hatched about the first week in July, and the silkies a week or so earlier. I've been really bad about keeping track of my hatches this summer. My sister Candice (the one who was with me Saturday) had a bad stroke at the beginning of the summer, so hospitals, doctor's appointments, etc. kept me pretty preoccupied. I tended to stick eggs into the incubator without even labeling them and moving them to the hatcher when I saw a pip. Terrible, huh? And then I was throwing chicks together without regard for breed so have been trying to figure some of them out; not hard when they get a little older, but some look pretty similar as chicks.

I don't want anything for the second Polish chick; it went for a good cause. If you feel that you must do something, take a bag of clay cat litter or a couple of bottles of bleach to the Humane Society.

I think that you had mentioned that you had wanted a couple more silkies. There will be some swaps coming up in Kentucky in the next few weeks. There is one at Franfort the 4th Saturday of each month; in Shelbyville the first Saturday each month. A really good one is at Milton Fri and Sat of Labor Day weekend; they only have one in the spring and one in the fall and are usually well attended. At swaps you have to be a little more careful about checking out the birds than at a BYC meetup, but I've bought some nice ones at swaps. I'll probably be taking birds to Milton; it's one I really enjoy--lots of nice people and a variety of birds, animals, flea market stuff.

Great job on the shirts!

Thanks! I'm usually not a very artistic person so I was quite proud of my design!!

It was very cool!

I had put some eggs into lockdown a couple of days before CS, but didn't have much hope for them as they didn't look too good upon candling. I didn't check Saturday night as I was beat, but Sunday morning found 8 new silkies, 2 new Japanese bantams, and 1 little silkie stuck in the egg. I helped it out but it was pretty dry and weak; this morning it was running around the hatcher as if it knew what it was doing.
