Indiana 2010 Chickenstock-2011 NEWS!!

Tick tock the days go by

We should see if the news or something would do something or visit the party. To show how people still keep chickens.

I'd love to come, maybe I can catch a ride with Chuck.... I might even offer to drive....

I might have a few pygmy babies plus lots of scovies to sell....

I'll bring my famous pumpkin nut chco chip bread

I'll also bring a basket of soaps and lotions.... I'll make up some duckie lotion bars..... that should be "chicken" enough??

If everything goes as plan, and I am praying hard that it does, I have eggs in the bator now, and some due to arrive next week, and if they hatch (finally got the ner thermostat!), then I will have some teenagers to bring to the Chickenstock this year. In the bator now I have my own test eggs. A Silver Cuckoo Maran roo over two Aracauna hens, two Amber sexlink hens, one Black Autralorp hen, and 4 SLW hens. Should make for some interesting chicks if indeed he's doing his job! Lol! Does anyone know if Lady Jayne is coming this year? Cause I'd like to get Bantam Cochin eggs from her if she is. Provided she still breeds them. The birds I got from Heather last year, she said she hatched them, but got the eggs from Lady Jayne. So since Heather got out of Cochins, I'm going directly to the source, lol. The pair I bought were gorgeous. Unfortunately my kids brought home dogs this past summer and they killed my white Cochin hen. And the roo, he decided to challenge my Alpha roo, and got his waddle torn, so while he show quality, he can't be shown. Soooo....I need new Cochins! I'll hopefully have some eggs and young birds to bring this year. I'll be praying everything works out right. If my birds cooperate I'll have some mixed Bantams to bring, some pure Bantam Cochins, possibly some White Silkies, and whatever I don't want from what hatches out of the eggs I have coming, plus any extras of the ones that I already have in the bator, provided they are fertile and actually hatch. There's no guarantee on that. I hear the girls doing their songs, but I never see him mounting them. So I won't know til I candle the eggs next week. I know that of all the eggs we've cracked open from that coop, most weren't fertile a few months ago, but the last few weeks lately have had the bullseye appearing more frequently. My daughter had to wait to have the ones that she has now to put in the bator because her sister dropped her eggs last week and cracked all but one. But the girls were nice and laid some more, so she has 5 in the bator now. I know most of my eggs come from my sexlink hens. They lay wonderfully, but I think my Aracaunas are laying now because some of the eggs are smaller and pink, and I know when my Wyandotte girls are laying because they lay a nice large, darker brown egg. Funny how you can identify who is laying what egg? Lol. I think my Australorp is laying the light brown eggs. Not 100% sure though. I'll give an update closer to August as to what I am for sure bringing.

I'll be on the lookout for some Speckled Sussex, Silver or Golden Marans, though I'd take Black Copper, or just about any color, Lemon Blue, Lemon Splash (it's a wish really!), Black, White, Blue, Golden Laced, or practically any color of Bantam Cochins, Silkies in any color EXCEPT white, Salmon Faverolles, d'Uccles in porcelain or Mille Fleur (though I am open to the idea of other colors) Turkens (I REALLY want some more Naked Necks!!!), and I am also interested in ducks. What I really would like are Indian Runners. My older daughter has her heart set Fawn and White Runners. I am also interested possibly in a pair of Call Ducks. Most everything is for 4-H. I'm also possibly interested in Barnenvelders (Did I spell that one right? Lol!) as the more I read about them, the more I think they would be a nice bird to have. If anyone is interested in a specific color of a bird I might be bringing, let me know and I will tell you if I have it, and if I'm bringing it. For instance, my Bantam Cochins. Currently I have Black Mottled, White (female is a Frizzle), Splash, Barred, and a Back frizzle hen that I could cross to either my Mottled or my Barred. But I can't be certain now, in February, what eggs or chicks I will have in August, know what I mean? Oh, and I also have Bantam Buff Orpingtons. However, I have 3 roos and one hen, so I might be bringing two roos to give away if anyone is interested. They are good boys, docile, and surprisingly, they don't crow. They are low men on the totem pole though, so that may be a reason why. My Silkie roo doesn't crow either.

Here are a few pics of my flock. This winter, they are kept together, but once the weather is nice, I will seperate out the colors and breed the colors pure. I will also be breeding for the Blue Mottled gene:

Here, in the upper left corner is my Black Mottled roo Bam Bam, you can also see my White Frizzled Cochin hen, my White Silkie roo, and my Splash roo:

Your more than welcome to ride along with me, hopefully I'll hear from Shelley as to whether or not she is going to come up and meet up with me and Flowerpot. I'll just have to take out the rear seat on the van to accommodate the critters.

Actually, I do like Swedish. I think they are beautiful. I might be interested in some. I currently have a Mallard pair that I love. My only concern with them is that they could fly off and I'd lose them forever. I am planning to buy a kennel and put a screening over the top so they can't escape. If I can do that, I'll be more interested in flying breeds of duck. Then I can get a Pekin, which is what I would really love to have. My Mallards scared me when they figured out how to fly as I had them free ranging in my yard and I was afraid they would take off, but all I had to do was very firmly yell the female's name (Marion), and she would fly around the yard and land right back by the coop. And wherever she went, her mate Jesse went. But I love those silly birds. For Mallards, they are surprisingly tame and I'd miss them so much if they flew away and didn't come back. I have a personal relationship with each of my birds. I want them to know I love them, and care about them. Ducks included. I think it makes for a nicer bird. Once I have the kennel set up, I'll update you here. I know my older daughter and I were discussing Swedish. We both like them. How much do you think you'll be asking for them?

I sure hope Shelley is coming. I'd like to get some more button quail from her, and I'm curious to see what birds she might be bringing. The Mottled Cochin pair I got from her last year feathered out beautifully, and they have wonderful temperments.
