Indiana 2010 Chickenstock-2011 NEWS!!

I trimmed the feathers on Phoenix's head. I cut them back 3/4, but it is still hanging over his eye. The skin is so loose on the top of his head, maybe from the attack, but I am afraid to trim it back any further. I am afraid of catching the skin. But it is not just the feathers hanging over, it its the skin too, so tying the feathers up won't help. His skin is so white underneath the hang and it smells, but does not look infected.
I am afraid he may go blind in that eye, but don't now what else to do. I feel so sorry for him. I know it is driving him insane, but don't know what else to do, short of having surgery and hubby would never go for that on a chicken. HE is so sweet. He loves to be held, and is always so nervous because, even thought the others have accepted him, he is the low man on the pecking order and is afraid to get too close to the others. We will have the coop finished soon and they will have a fenced area to run around in, so hopefully having more room will help.

Aww, I feel so bad for little Phoenix. He is such a cutie. If it smells, I'd be concerned about infection. I would treat the area with Neosporin, but the kind without the numbing agent in it. We're using it to treat some eye infections right now. I hope Phoenix feels better soon.

Thanks, I will do that. Yeah, I feel for him. He is healthy, otherwise, but I wish I could do something else for him. I am just afraid he will go blind in that eye, not being able to use it.

Funny.....

I had a thread about this in the random discussion area or wherever, but since this just got bumped up, for anybody that might catch it here, here is a youtube link to a segment from a WTIU (Bloomington PBS) TV program where they filmed of my turkeys and such.....

Great interview!!

If he cleans coops does he want to come down to southern indiana and tape another segment?

What you saw him do was pretty much all he did.

The way they had acted when we were talking about taping they acted like they were gonna really do a bunch of work with me and stuff, but when it came down to it it really just amounted to acting. lol I told the guy he could come back after he got off work....his reply was that he works 24 hours a day. lol

Hey everyone. Well, out of the five chicks I got at Chickenstock, I have four roosters and one hen. Will I be able to keep them all together? They have become pets and I really love all my little roos. I plan on getting some Silkie hens as soon as I can. Right now I have Clem, a silkie/ Cochin mix rooster; BG, a blue splash Silkie rooster; Singer, a White Silkie Rooster (who just crowed for the first time this morning, darn it); Phoenix, a Polish rooster ( have not heard him crow yet); and Ebony, a black Polish/Silkie mix. The problem is, I only have room for about 4 or 5 more hens, so that will only be 6 hens for four roosters. I do not have the room to separate the roosters, so am I going to have to give up some of my little darlings? If so, it is going to be an extremely difficult choice, especially if I am only going to be able to keep one rooster. I really want silkies, but Clem is such a sweet heart and has stolen my heart, as has little Phoenix , which is the little Polish that survived the attack at chicken stock. Do roosters ever get along together when there isn't enough hens to go around? Right now, Clem is top dog, but he and BG are always chest butting and dancing around each other. And BG picks on Singer, nothing serious, but will it become serious? Help!
