INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am so very sorry. Please visit the other threads I showed earlier in this thread. There are others with md in their flocks and can help. They have helped me tremendously.

Will you be having a necropsy done? Did they do blood work?

It is so easy to become attached to these little creatures. You did a good thing today. She was loved and she knew it. You can't really do much more than that.

Deb

No blood work, no necropsy. Unfortunately, fiscal liquidity isn't high at the moment. We were pressed to cover the visit and euthanasia. We did the best we could by her at this time. In future we will have the girls looked at for MD I hope. When things aren't as tight.

The vet seemed fairly certain, and under the circumstances, we weren't in the best shape to ferry the body around truth be told. Hopefully it will get easier with time.

I was so egg-cited that both ducks had started to lay and my nine year old turns out to be allergic to duck eggs. Figures!

Oh no, hope the 9 year olds ok? did he have a reaction?

How does your khaki duck compare in size to your chickens? my khaki ducks are 10 weeks old and they are larger than my production red chickens. Also about how old are you ducks? I'm curious as when to expect an egg.
I am curious too, when do pekin start to lay? I have a sinking feeling I hatched all girls, UGH
Well I just walked outside to a surprise. I go outside to feed my chickens and I see they are all outside of the pen! I was so sure a hawk took one because there's a lot of hawks where I live, but surprisingly they were all there still. I figured i forgot to lock the gate and the wind blew it open. I got lucky this time.
Yikes, thats a scary feeling!
ok, i admit scanning over a thousand posts! made a trip to orshelyn in seymour and heard "chirp, chirp, chirp" my daughter and I's eyes got big, and we ran toward the sound. YES, they have chicks in September! my girl said "this isn't chick season!?!" she's 6. anyway... my eggs in the incubator are due to hatch tomorrow or tuesday.... aaaaaaannnnnddddd i have chicks to be delivered the this week

woohoo! got a new layer today. my tolbunt pullet laid her first egg (or i guess it could be a naked neck pullet but they are supposed to be brown egg layers). its kind of nice to get eggs of different colors now!

tolbunt egg, legbar egg, birchen marans egg, and naked neck egg

Oh that will make a beautiful egg basket!

CRselvy, sorry about your thumb. We all learned from you, don't stick your thumb with hardware cloth. Wear gloves!

To the S. Bend people, I grew up in that area and have family there still. I know they just allowed chickens in S. Bend, but I don't know about Mishawaka.

It's gonna get hot this week, then get cold this weekend. Are we going to use the AC this week, and turn on the heat next? Typical IN weather.
96 yesterday! ugh I felt like I was melted most of the day. Changed water several times for all the critters, and put ice bottles in the buckets.

Quote: Golfballs and ceramic eggs worked good for me. My BAs were a little slow to learn the nest boxes but are doing great now.
Mine also ,ad dash to the coop singing the egg song all the way

they rarely lay outside of the nest boxes now.
I bought 2 2-month pullets of the Crested Cream Legbar persuasion.

I invite knowledgeable comments, good or bad, on their adherence to the CCL standards and their suitability for breeding.

Too Fast, that's for KNOWLEDGEABLE folks...........Oh, OK, go ahead, if you must.

To my eye, the one on the right has no cream color on the neck. Also, I thought it was to extend down the chest.

They are young, so it may develop, but I don't see it.

John
They are beautiful john, nice find!
My eggs have been in the 50 gram range. I got a little one of only 30 grams.
It turned out to be a double. Must have been from a very young rooster.

CRSelvey~ I'm ready to order a load of coarse sand/gravel for the coop floor and for a large sandbox that we made under a tree, in a shady, secluded area of the yard where the hens like to hang out. I looked online at Mulzer Crushed Stone, which has a location locally and the options include: Fill Sand, State Sand, Washed Pea Gravel. What did you purchase when you ordered a truck load? Maybe I should do a mix of the pea gravel with sand? I have no idea what State Sand is.
I can ask DH he knows all that stuff. He drives one of those big tri-axle dump trucks and delivers material.

Mr. Tattoohead, You did everything for Sesame and she was lucky to be a part of your family. I know that vet bills can be difficult to justify sometimes when there are other financial demands. I took Violet to the vet the second time because I needed to know what to do because I didn't want to prolong her suffering if there was no hope. Although it was terribly sad news, I felt good about having her put to sleep by a vet and taking her home to bury in my flower garden. I hope you similarly feel good about taking such good care of Sesame at home and taking her to the vet to get a professional opinion. It will get easier; your other girls will cheer you up. Take care.

28 weeks and mine still are not laying. :(
I was told it could take a long time for them to get started though.
Kiniska forgive my old lady brain, I forgot what breed you have?
Quinstar- my younger girls leghorn started at 18-20 weeks. But my EEs and a few others have just now started so 24 ish. So it has depended on the breed. And since I have older girls already laying, eveybody has done pretty good going to the boxes. I have found a few eggs on the ground here and there! Now that being said I buff Banty brahmas who are the same age and they were laying a few and haven't laid anything for weeks!! I'm thinking about throwing them in with the big girls if they don't step up! They are large for Bantys anyhow.
My banties did very well in the big girl coop. My OEGB now have their own mini coop since they are at laying age, and Harry is quite happy about that!
Quote: ugh, I am so sorry John.

so i moved 2 of the younger silkies in with the older group last night. they younger ones were just a tad smaller than most of them, but larger than the oegb in that pen. The showgirl pullet was establishing the pecking order, but overall, it went very well. I checked on them around 11pm last night and they were all huddled in the corner. i went out today and one of the younger girls was dead. There was no external injuries. I think she got shuffled to the bottom of the pile and got smothered. needless to say, the other silkie got put back in her original box with the even younger silkies.
I am so sorry, They do seem more fragile than the other birds. I lost a little pullet Fluff a few weeks ago, and nothing wrong with her on inspection. Really upset me, she was very sweet and haven't a clue what happened to her.. Puff kept attacking me when I went to pick her up, poor guy. I have 2 others I put him with so he isn't alone. So far I think I only have one other pullet, ugh.
my chicks will be delivered tomorrow! yay! hope they call me early in the am. i'll call when i get up just to make sure they won't sit there all day

so exciting! I was a pain with the post office, called several times when I knew they would arrive the next day!

Sooo, based on this, I went out and looked at my birds when I got home from work. Does'nt look good. I believe my flock of 7 girls and 2 boys has turned into a flock of 3 girls and 6 boys....my rooster luck lives on. I'll still grow them out to see, but I guess you live and learn. I got 2 of the 'boys' as chicks, and to my eyes they had all the markings to look for to be girls. But I guess if another type of chicken got into the mix, all bets were off.

Ugh.. I have been lucky so far, but with hatching I am getting way too many. Once the cooler weather arrives this weekend I have to do some fall cleaning of the roosters.
Some of these boys are my first hatches and I am getting soft. Mt BR/GLW crosses are so sweet I will probably keep the best one. Have to quit putting it off.
We all need to share pics of the roosters to be dinners, someone may want them! I will post some tomorrow.

On a lighter note, here are the eggs I got today:

Ok so I want to deworm the chickens as I'm pretty sure I saw some tape worm segments in a fresh pile while changing waters today after work. I'm wanting to use valbazen but of course can't find any locally. Also 500ml bottle is the smallest I can find for sale. I really don't need all this. So, is there anyone interested in selling any of theirs (I will have to figure out how much I need) or anyone interested in splitting a bottle? I just know the wormer will expire before I'm able to use it all.

That's the best price I have seen so far with shipping. Good company too, I have purchased from them for at least 10 years, probably longer.
I would be willing to do the split but have no idea how to get up with you for it. PM me if you have any thoughts!
Ugh. I read the herpes virus that causes mareks can 'live for several months at room temperarure' and also read 'can live at least 12 months in feather dust'.
