I need to get pictures. I can't really tell. I did google and saw pics, but most pics are really bad cases. She just has a couple raised like where her foot bends, like where the ankle would be. I may just treat them all to be sure rather than sorryI knew we were running too late for the chicken show, but as we neared the Bloomington Rural King on the way into town, I suggested to DH that we stop at RK to look at the chicks. He replied, "I didn't know there was such a thing as fall chicks, and he kinda sped up and drove right by! I wasn't really surprised. I did get a chicken fix by visiting his cousin's chickens.
While we were there, I saw this snake passing by and someone said that it was a water snake. I haven't been able to identify it by looking online . . . I know we have some snake experts on this thread who may know . . .

danad & gunchief~ Did you both wear your name tags I posted for easy recognition or did you wear disguises to ensure you wouldn't be harassed?![]()

Janet~ I remembered your question and asked my brother-in-law, who recently retired as an agronomist for Indiana Geological Survey/IU. He suggested that you send a soil sample to Purdue where they can determine if it needs lime or phosphorus, etc. Here's more info: www.ag.purdue.edu/counties/marion/Pages/SoilSamplingTesting.aspx
I just noticed that hogster already suggested the same thing! I didn't even have to ask a soil scientist, after all.
hogster posted: I did see one white chicken (really don't know what kind she is lmao) that has some raised scales in the bend of her foot.
hogster~ Google "scaley leg mites." (There are mild to heavy cases) My BR had that, which caused raised scales on her legs/bend of foot. The treatment that worked the best was using VetRx (camphor & oils)-- rub on legs several days in a row. Clean/change bedding...you can read more online, or if you think yours has scaley leg mites (transmitted from wild birds), you can let me know.
jsummers~ I was just thinking about you the other day and wondered where you've been. Good to have you posting again!![]()
I'm not sure where in Indiana you are, but close to me we have the amish. They will kill and butcher a chicken for you. Perhaps they will just kill it for you so you can take her home to bury her. Here is like $2.25-2.50 per bird from what I've been told. Might be another option for you. If you are northern Indiana, I have a number to a guy who did my neighbors turkeys, PM me and I'll give you his number.i read the link you posted, even though it came right out and said all that it makes me feel better to hear all the truth. mo i font have a killing cone. i am seriuosly thinking about hanging her up by the legs sayingmy last good byes cutting her throat,. and running away without looking back. i feeling i would look back. i never really thought sbout drugging her. Which ever way i go i know i am going to feel bad. i might as well puck a way and get it over with. If it makes any difference i am not going to eat her.
Half of mine hide the other half stay out to forage. And yes they do look bad when they are wet!my chickens love rain they never go inside when it rains. And man do they look ugly when they are wet!
I'd agree. Looks like an eastern milk snake.Ccccc- M2H had those really cute tags for us to print. But I don't have a way to do that.
M2H- milk snake!!! I had one here this spring when we plowed a field for alfalfa. It's a good snake, goes after barn mice. Speaking of mice.....saw a rat in one of my coups last night!!!!eeeeeewwwwwhhhh!!!! New warfare to begin!!

I charge $5 for day olds but if I have extras, I always throw in a few for free (of course mine are bantams)Curious here, how much do breeders charge for their AM?
When buying hatching eggs always make sure you ad shipping. Some people look cheaper, but ask more shipping. I charge $40(which includes shipping) for 12+, but once again if I have them I've sent as many as 2 dozen eggs, some will send you 13 eggs and some will send lots of extras. It really depends on what breeder you get from. Every breeder has their own price.I have never seen higher than $10 a chick, but i havent emailed every breeder on the ABC. I usually buy hatching eggs and their is a pretty well know breeder in illionis and he only want $25 for a dozen eggs, some breeders want $45 for a dozen. I am going to email some other breeders soon, i will let you know what some of them are asking.
Paul is a great and honest guy, but there are breeders right here in Indiana, why not buy from them. Paul bought a lav. cockrel from my daughter for his breeding program, So He thinks she has great birds!!!Paul smith, a very very well known and respected breeder ships AM chicks. I just emailed him to ask him how much he charges per chick. I am not sure how much he charges as I have never bought directly from him, but do have some of his lines. I want to buy some him eventually though. I am pretty sure he ships day old chicks.
The flailing around is the worse part for us as humans , and though I tell myself it is just nerves, It still gets to me, I've used the starter fluid method and the broom stick. I've also just picked a few up and wrung their necks, It is one of the hardest things for me to do. No matter what method we use, some times we just have to get over it and do it, At least that is what I tell myself. LOL !!my russian orloff has gotten worse. Another chicken with a torn tendon. I just went through this with my SF a few months ago. i need to cull her. i do not habe the money to uthanize her, and i watched some youtube videos on how to kill chickens and seeing them flailing sround and all i just cant bringyself to do it. I know dhe us in pain though, i think it is something i am just going to have to try and get used to. I am sure i eill bawl my eyes out, but it is better than her being in pain. I know she usny going to get any better, she has not improved at all. I just font want to have to do it.
People even use the broom stick method for rabbits,Old Salt has a broomstick method. The slicing of the veins takes a very very sharp knife. Some of the posts on here say you can gas a chick. maybe you could gas an older chicken too put her in a large box and hook up the car exhaust. I would not eat a gassed chicken but it might be a less painful way to go. It sure would be less bloody and you would not have to watch the chicken die since it would be in a box.
Another option is to bring her to my DH tomorrow night and for free he will take care of it for you while you look at my HRIR chickens. and the mystery AM chicks. You could even bring along the pups if they are ready. We are a long drive though.
I'd be interested depending on how far you are from me??If anyone is interested in one of those dog igloo dog houses - I have a medium sized one that I will give away. I don't need it any more and have been reluctant to sell it on craigslist (not worth worrying about the crazies!). Free to a good home!![]()
I really hope it isn't a little boy, I would hate to fall in love with him and have to sell himcan't keep a liil roo, they were supposed to be pullets guess we will find out!!!#![]()
morning everyone, chick question, my little babies turned out to be EEs, about a week old they are on day three at home all alive and well eating drinking etc, am I out of the woods as far as one of them not making it? I was in fear of that, that's the main reason I got four, but it looks like they are all keepers I hope! When can u stop worrying?!?![]()
