INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I don't have a great picture here - I can try to get a better one later. She is a Wheaten color (I think?) and has some kind of tufts around her head. She was a freebie and the guy that gave her to me said she was Ameraucana, but I don't know where he got her from or how sure he was. I'll try to snap a better pic later today. Wouldn't sticking a couple of the aggressive EEs into a more established flock help bump them down the pecking order a bit? Would getting a rooster help? I'm not anti-rooster, my biggest hesitation is that I have neighbors not too far away and don't want my animals to be a nuisance to THEM (and slightly to my super light-sleeper self).

She kinda looks like my Peaches

Oh my goodness you guys!! I cannot keep up. There are like 10 different subjects being discussed lol! I'm not going to try to respond to the last two days on here. I am however going to update the Chick hatching progress. It is day 6. She is still sitting like a professional that has done this before. In the mornings I get her up and set her on the barn floor or out in the grass for 5 minutes or so, to get that nasty broody poo out and eat some breakfast. She eats a little and does her business and goes right back to her nest. In the evening I get her up or another 5 minutes to repeat the process. I don't think she is getting up to eat on her own, so the 10 minutes a day I take her out, she is at least eating something. I candled the eggs for the first time today while she ate dinner. Man, I am so confused. It wasn't quite dark enough I don't think, where I was candling. Two of the eggs appeared clear to me so I put a penciled question mark on them. I saw 2 distinct embryos moving on two others so those got a check mark. The other 8 are iffy. They all looked like the ones I saw the movement in, with a large dark area, and the air sack, but I couldn't see well enough to find the dark spot to see for movement. So I put them all back into the nest and I will try again in a week. I have a dozen bearded silkie eggs in the silkie coop too, if anyone is interested in them. Otherwise I may incubate. I don't want to waste them.
I only have limited experience with a broody but I hung out in the broody hen forum for awhile ;). What happened in my hens case and what usually happens (per what I've read in the forum) is the broody hen gets up once a day to eat, do her business, etc. they can be pretty quick about it so if you miss it don't worry. Just make sure food and water are near. I can't wait to see pics of these babies they are going to be adorable!!

I hope we get some babies. I did notcie with a few of the eggs, when I candled and moved them around, the large dark spot that took up most of the egg, moved with the motion of turning it. As I have never had any experience with this, I don't really know what to look for other than the pics of development I have seen online. None of the eggs she is sitting on are hers, if they do hatch I hope she accepts them. She has silkie, wyandotte, an ee egg and an autralorp egg under her. 12 total. I think I may have to candle again in the dark next time.

Sorry to hear about your girl with the torn tendon, CCC...Chickens. It's a crap feeling.

I need to get pictures.  I can't really tell.   I did google and saw pics, but most pics are really bad cases.  She just has a couple raised like where her foot bends, like where the ankle would be.  I may just treat them all to be sure rather than sorry

I'm not sure where in Indiana you are, but close to me we have the amish.  They will kill and butcher a chicken for you.  Perhaps they will just kill it for you so you can take her home to bury her.  Here is like $2.25-2.50 per bird from what I've been told.  Might be another option for you. If you are northern Indiana, I have a number to a guy who did my neighbors turkeys, PM me and I'll give you his number.

Half of mine hide the other half stay out to forage.  And yes they do look bad when they are wet!

are they in warren? I have the phone nimber for a butcher in warren.

I charge $5  for day olds but if I have extras, I always throw in a few for free (of course mine are bantams)

When buying hatching eggs always make sure you ad shipping. Some people look cheaper, but ask more shipping. I charge $40(which includes shipping) for 12+, but once again if I have them I've sent as many as 2 dozen eggs, some will send you 13 eggs and some will send lots of extras.

Paul is a great and honest guy, but there are breeders right here in Indiana, why not buy from them. Paul bought a lav. cockrel from my daughter for his breeding program, So He thinks she has great birds!!!

The flailing around is the worse part for us as humans , and though I tell myself it is just nerves, It still gets to me, I've used the starter fluid method and the broom stick. I've also just picked a few up and wrung their necks, It is one of the hardest things for me to do. No matter what method we use, some times we just have to get over it and do it, At least that is what I tell myself.  LOL !!

People even use the broom stick method for rabbits,

I'd be interested depending on how far you are from me??

i am not selling eggs and i assumed peiple woulf figure out that shipping was not included because that woul make the eggs $5 or less. It was kust list an asking price from someone i bought from.

i know there are breeders here in indiana i just like the quality if his birds better. It has more of what u am looking for when i buy AMs. I have a list of people I want to buy AMs from he is on the top of the list.

i watched a youtube video and it made me feel so bad for the chicken. I know it is just nerves but it still looks as if they are alive

Wrong! I have no idea what a broomstick method is. I hold the chicken by the feet, put my foot on its head and pull hard until I feel the neck break. That makes the chicken limp. I then hold it on a stump or something and chop off the head with a hatchet so it will bleed out. Then drop it in the grass and wait for it to become still. If you are not processing the meat, there is no need to remove the head. John
Using your best damsel in distress voice, call the police/sheriff in your area and explain your problem. Ask them if anyone in your area knows chickens and would be willing to do the deed for you. John
Thank you for all th advice :)

yep she is an easter egger.A very pretty one at that!
I'm really sorry. I know how hard it is. I broke down and had my lil roo euthanized but if it happened again I couldn't afford to go back to the vet either. I had read something about gassing with baking soda and peroxide. I don't know details but it was on BYC. I'm sorry :(
thank you. I will try and research ig more just to see what it is

I was able to get another pic of Margo the (apparently) Easter Egger not Amaraucana?

And since I was out there taking pics, this is Harriet - the BR (she is pretty fantastic with her big floppy comb). ALso, she is down to one tail feather right now :)

And Lily (Welsummer) with Vivie (RIR)
