INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

21 heritage barred rock eggs in the incubator for a week now. Not a single one has veining! I have other eggs in there, bantam Cochins that go into lockdown next week and showgirl eggs that have only been in there for a few days. The Cochins are still doing great and can see movement in the shell. The others are too soon to tell. I would have thought if it was my incubator then the Cochins would be dead too. I have 5 thermometers in the incubator and all read 99 (only measure whole numbers) to 100.4F. I'm wondering if the USPS did something to them? Both were shipped the same time, one from Georgia the other from Tennessee, both arrived same day, and both put into incubator at the same time. Very frustrating.
Aw! Too bad!

mother2hens : the current avatar is of our silver penciled Iowa Blue (we are getting 2 more ullets & a cockrel sunday, but birchen color)
Also we have one whit chantacler pullet
iamfivewire~ After I read your post, I remembered someone who ordered another breed, but ended up with Iowa Blues, so I went through a billion posts because it was bugging me who that was-- and it was you!

Geez. Anyway, they are very pretty and sweet looking. Your chanticler is very soft and beautiful, but it's hard to beat a rooster's plumage, and your EE cockerel is stunning. That's interesting that his pattern is different on each side. He might be able to trick the ladies into thinking that he is actually two different "suitors."

kabhyper~ My, you sound like a calm, experienced broody hen owner-- You're going to actually sleep tonight! Good luck with the next hatch.

CCCHICKENS~ That is terrible about the puppies! People can be so ignorant. Btw, you know we can all talk/vent about non-chicken related subjects!
jchny~ How are Mr. and Miss Bourbon Red Turkey doing?
bradselig~ It seems more likely that if the eggs came from different states that it has more to do with the place that sent them. However, I don't know all the details . . . I am sorry to hear about your HBR eggs.

Hi guys! Playing catchup again, have an event taking place here with my dad.
He has finally agreed to his heart surgery. We will know more in November, but he told us at dinner last weekend.
My parents have been married 53 years.
This is pretty scary but the other option is do nothing, giving him little time left with us. He needs a valve replaced.
He is 79, will be 80 in January. The surgery is pretty invasive.
He also had bypasses done in the mid 80s and they have to be worked on too.
So, it will be an open-heart process. Needless to say I won't be around much

I am reducing my flocks drastically so I can still provide proper care for them too.
Am trying to find transport for moms dialysis, with a reputable company.
If she feels uncomfortable with them at all, then it just will have to be me.
Everything else I can work out, but the 5 hours 3 days a week will make it very difficult with Dad needing care too.
I may have to drop Mom off, and go back home to care for Dad.
Going to do more searches tonight and hopefully find someone.
Am off to catch up! Hope everyone is well.

Hiii! I from Covington,IN. I have about 25-30 chickens all different breeds :)

Ill try to catch up tonight but I got my first partridge showgirl egg this morning! It will go in the incubator with white showgirl eggs and tolbunt polish (which have still continued to be infertile!) Tonight.
How exciting, sending good vibes!

I haven't been around on this thread for a few months now (5000+ posts behind-yikes) due to being so busy, but now that school has been in a while and I am getting somewhat caught up I thought I would say hello and see what everyone has been up to. I only went back three days though...there's NO WAY I would ever catch up completely! I have a terrible habit of getting on this site and losing track of time. It's like a black hole. A wonderfully entertaining black hole, but still...I had to quit cold turkey. It's been so long I should probably re-introduce myself. My name is Tami and I am a Chicken Addict and Hatchaholic.

It's been an interesting year here. I sold my entire flock of pet quality Silkies(together thankfully) and slowly "upgraded" to all SQ and BQ Silkies. We have a LARGE and diverse pet/laying flock and a pet/bantam flock as well in addition to my Silkies. Chicken Math ran rampant this spring/summer but I think I am finally getting my numbers under control. My boys decided to stop raising their birds for 4-H and sell them all (had been raising SL Polish, BCW Polish, Porcelain D'Uccles and Gray Japanese between the two of them) but my daughter is still very active with her flock of Buff Silkies and her BB Red Dutch. My boys were reluctant to join 4-H this last year but I made them give it a try and it just wasn't for them. My youngest might try doing archery instead of poultry and stay in after all.

I myself have White, Black, Blue, Gray, Paint, and Cuckoo in Silkies, Showgirls, CCLs and LF Cochins. We have just started fall hatching to get ready for showing this coming year (Silkies are very slow to mature so we are getting a head start). My daughter and I have a passion for raising these gorgeous fluffy butts so we figured showing would be our next adventure.

We are also currently growing out our first Cornish meat birds. We have butchered extra or mean roos in the past but never raised birds just for meat before. We started small with 10 this time just to get a feel for it. So far, pretty gross. They lay by their feeders all day eating and pooping. Just laying in it. I clean out their pen every day and still they just lay in poop and their skin gets red from it but they don't seem to care. They poop SO much! It's drastic compared to all of our other birds. I wasn't expecting them to be quite so disgusting. It's been no problem to stay unattached.

I participated in a Poultry Swap a couple of weeks ago at the TSC in Corydon. That was a fun afternoon. It was nice to visit with other "chicken people". I am considering talking to the manager of our local store to see about doing something similar. How many of you would consider traveling to Seymour to participate? If I can get at least half a dozen of us together I will give it a shot.

I have a few stragglers left to re-home so if anyone is looking for anything in particular just PM me. I know we have a few OEGB pairs, four Por. D'Uccle pullets, a very young RIR cockerel (who we bought a couple of weeks ago as a day old pullet from Orscheln
he.gif
), a Speckled Sussex cockerel, a beautiful CCL cockerel-good straight comb), an Exchequer Leghorn cockerel and two trios of Polish (one SL and one BCW). I also have one BQ Black Silkie cockerel (purchased as a chick directly from Geri Godina) and one BQ White Silkie rooster. I am sure there are a few I have forgotten to mention too!

Good to see you back!

Hey guys:) Sorry to butt in, but I'm moving to Ft Wayne in april, and am curious on the legality of owning chickens within the city? I'd probably only get 2 or 3 bantam hens, I just can't imagine not having ANY chickens since I grew up with them. If it isn't allowed I would probably keep them very well hidden xD

Hehe! we won't tell

welcome to the thread!

hatch day was supposed to be tomorrow or thursday!! I go out to feed and water the chickens and i hear all kinds of peeps from under my broodie. really 19 days. wow. couldnt see much I tried to peek a little and she bit me. I saw one little black fuzzball and one little yellowish white fuzzball.. I didnt want to pester her a whole lot so i have no idea what all is going on under there.. So far the other chickens are not bothering them at all but they all hear the peeps I am sure of that.. YAAAY I took a vacation day for THursday since That would have been 21 days.. I so wish i could switch it to today........

Congrats! Just think, you will have all day thursday to enjoy the new babies!

Well the little white one died in my hand. She was making a clicking noise when she breathed. Then she reared back like a seizure and died. I am heart broken. It was so fast. I think she had fluid in her lungs. Thank you all for your help. Just waiting to see how the other little one does.

I am so sorry
hugs.gif
I know how heartbreaking that is.

Lovely birds!

If you get them on Fermented Feed, the smell is reduced drastically, and processing is not as horrible an odor either.
Makes a huge difference in the gain in body mass and they are healthier birds too!

Thanks! They are wonderful too! I have a frizzled girl who follows me around and jumps to my arm or lap every chance she gets..the adult roo will come to me when called at night so I can put him in the coop..too cute!

Glad to hear Dad has decided on the surgery. Wishing you all the best thru the trying times and don't hesitate to ask for help. Sometimes that's harder for some to do! Let us know how we can help!
Sincerely
Mandy

Quote: I hear ya, I have to make some fast decisions since the roof on my big coop is bad.
I really am not up to doing a roof right now but after the storms its got to be done.
Pulled all of the bedding out, the coop was soaked, and a 1 foot section had fell in.
Pulled down any of the loose roofing left to be sure theres no nails to step on.
Last thing I need right now! Tarped the roof until this weekend and hope the predators don't get in
sad.png

Felt so bad for all my birds! Used 4 bales of hay to get them in dry bedding.
Sooooooo.... My friend gave me a newborn Pekin duck today to ease my pain of losing squeakers and swimmer. He (or she) is brooding with a silkie baby now. Anyone interested in going in on a hatchery order for a few female pekins or khakis? Anyone? lol. If you'd like some fall ducklings let me know!
smile.png

Pekin are so much fun! They have funny personalities, and sure know when you have food too!
My oldest hen/duck puts the chicken roos in their place fast, and is very proud of herself when she does.
She struts around with short quacks bobbing her head around, like ya, I showed him!
lau.gif

I realized I have do have a young drake, so will be hatching in a few months.
If you ever decide on muscovies, I will definitely go in on that!
I would love 3-4 more, but not until spring, ugh.
