INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ugh! Just my luck with the barred rocks! I'm watching a movie and notice the humidity level in my hatcher just has a small spike (I have a remote thermometer/hygrometer that displays on my end table). I go in to check and see the barred rock egg empty. I get excited but all I see are 2 yellow chicks! One was a silkie that just hatched a few hours prior. So that means my barred rocks are not actually barred rocks! So frustrating! I sent seller a message on eBay and just filed a claim. Between the first batch having not a single one develop and now the few that did develop not even barred rocks! I'm quite upset to say the least! I believe they are heritage RIR, at least that is the other breed the seller has listed. Anyone want it? May have a few more to go with it if they hatch.

Do you know what line of HRIR they are? the HRIR breed does not have the best results when lines are crossed. So knowing the line would help the new owner find additional chicks if they want to breed them.

Newbie Questions

1) leaves and grass--I read that several people collected up leaves and yard clippings in multiple bags (even from the neighborhood). interesting. Is that for using as "litter" or laying on top of the snow in the run? What precautions do you need to take? Wouldn't the leaves etc need to be dry to avoid mould and rot? Do the bags need air holes? Do you need to store them somewhere dry or just leave them bagged outside by the house?

2) Speaking of "litter" and chores etc. In addition to the coop & run, I need to plan for a shed. Somewhere to store feed, and litter and other things. (I am thinking of a lean to on the coop.)

what else do I need to have shed space for? A rake, my winter bowl heater (during the summer), what else. What do you regularly use for the upkeep of the flock? How much room do you recommend?

Thanks!
Dex
Its great, they love to scratch it up, look for bugs. Guineas and turkeys enjoy it too! My ducks and geese snuggle it up around them to keep warm, and nibble the leaves some.
My goats are just crazy over the mulberry, maple and cherry leaves. And my pigs

they hear the tractor start and run laps SQUEALING cause mom is bringing yummy leaves! I dump the lawn rake and they all go crazy plowing and rolling in it, just too funny to watch.
For your storage area, think about a 1st aid kit, food storage, a net, and if you plan to hatch, its nice to have a brooder in the coop too. Pipd has an excellent first aid kit you can find on the members links page in my signature. Hope that helps

Good to see you!!!! So happy to hear you can still see your chickens!
Quote: Exactly what I use for my goats. the ice cream bucket works great, DH is happy to keep me in stock with them too

I would need too many for all the other birds. We have a frost free spigot right across from my coop so its not a big issue refilling buckets.

here is a picture or two. Worth a thousand words. I found these on google. I saw the idea a long time a go on BYC but I have no idea where that thread is now.

I would be putting the lights on the inside more like the first picture.

Thats a great idea! I may do this, I need better lighting in the coop anyway, and the rope lights are pretty energy efficient and safe.
They last forever too!

You know, it will in all liklyhood be okay. I just like the idea of erring on the side of caution. You can use the heated dog bowls - as-is or altered like shown earlier - safely outside too. they're made to be out there.

I've always fed and watered inside the coop. I know a lot of folks do outside - in fact, maybe most feed outside. I may be forced to move it all outside sometime if I don't get a bigger coop!

I always do both outside, and never leave any leftover food. FF doesn't get scattered like dry so its usually all gone or very little left.
If its extreme cold, I will put waterers inside and change them frequently throughout the day. Usually February is the worst month.

Hello all Hoosiers! Though I am now living in the Bluegrass state I consider myself almost a Hoosier. I was born and raised in Anderson, In and retired from Delco-Remy. I still have family living in Anderson. I am a retired farmer now and started raising chickens and turkeys. Though this is my last year for the turkeys! Too much trouble babysitting them. They like to wonder too much! This is my 3rd day on this web site and must say I do like it. Well will get off and will be checking on you all often.

Glad you found us, and you are most certainly welcome to jump right in.

Just a reminder, I'll be going to Anderson, IN sometime tomorrow afternoon. If another is interested I still have a few chicks I'd like to sell (legbar cockerels, rhodebar cockerel, silkie cockerel, NNs) that I can bring with to meet up. I will be letting them go cheap to make room for other chickens. Also if anyone in northern Indiana is interested in Janet's (jchny2000) wyandottes, I'd be willing to transfer them up north to the Huntington area for you to pick up. Just get with me if you're interested in any of my birds and Janet if her birds to arrange payment (I would also be willing to pay her and you pay me at pickup).

I also believe M2H, offered to deliver the wyandottes down south as well for you southern folk!
Thanks so much, you are both awesome!
The birds are this years hatch, Gold Laced Wyandottes.
Plenty of roos, and hens. $5 hens to BYC members only, roos are free if you buy hens!
Last call on these guys. They go on craigslist Friday evening.
here is the Dad, Red:

Pullet mom Spike year ago in may

2 of the moms, Betsy and Gertie:

I am keeping my original 4, but have had an excellent year with their hatches.
All my birds free range, so I do recommend quarantine.

One of the remaining 4 heritage BR eggs has externally pipped! I hope the others are soon to follow.

If no one takes them, I will, I can add them to the egg flock this spring.
I want more variety of blood lines to keep the roos bigger.
