INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

hi guys, getting caught up from the last few days.
My calves all had scours
sad.png
its bad stuff, like cocci in meat birds, but horribly debilitating and takes them fast.
Been up day and night with them, just heartbreaking.
I have been researching cows over a year now and had a pretty good "first aid kit" set up.
I put calf blankets on all 3 when we transported them Sunday and our livestock trailer is enclosed in the front.
Deep hay, kept them warm and dry. Tarped the divider to prevent drafts too! Barely took any milk when we got home.
That really had me worried! They were terribly ill by Monday morning.
Watery, horrible diarrhea out of all 3, I knew when I saw that we got "took"

Started treatment immediately, 2 are recovering well. I lost one of the jersey mix around 4 am yesterday

I am learning "good deals" with livestock are usually someone disposing of their problems, just sad

.
Of course, the man that did the swap with us is not returning calls, or answering emails.
DH is saying he wants to go up there and "discuss this"... I am leaving that up to him. I won't be as trusting again.
This is twice this year I let my guard down and went with a swap, lost a piglet last time, now a calf.
I guess I need to not trust so much, but I really believe most people mean well

That's so sad! I'm sorry. I hope the others recover for you. It's hard to lose them.

Quote: Thanks, it was horrible to lose the poor lil guy. I was using a large syringe trying to rehydrate him.
He was down, wouldn't stand Monday so i knew it was bad.
The calves are so gentle and sweet, they bond to you pretty fast too, they are just babies.
I am not liking seeing how livestock are treated in general. We may be raising all of our own here.
Its not right, no matter what their purpose is, respect them, and give them love.
They deserve a real life, and proper care to prevent illness and suffering.

Good morning all! Lebanon got hit really hard by the storm. I had a tornado touch down and pass along the back pasture fence. My poor neighbor saw the whole thing. We got very lucky, no damage. I do know that one of the tornado's was right in the vicinity of Old Salt - has anyone heard from him? I was thinking about him last night when I heard where the damage was. I was watching the news this morning and was getting really irritated by the lack of news in Lebanon. It kept getting mentioned as one of the hardest hit areas, but instead of showing the damage or doing any real reporting, let's show you the ONE building that got destroyed in Marion County. Soooo frustrating!
There were so many towns hit, its just horrible.
Glad the tornado missed you!
JOHN WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOU!!!

Gunchief- doodledoo to u 2!!

Brad- beautiful egg!!

Jchny- I'm so sorry. It's a hopeless feeling when an animal is sick. Sounds like, and I'm sure u did, try very hard to keep him going.

We love noodles here! I've never made them before, but have thought about it. Guess I need to take the plunge. Let's see...if I make noodles, wouldn't I need to get the pasta maker attachments for my Kitchenaid mixer? At least I could tell my husband I need the attachments -- he won't know if I really do or not -- he'll just love the homemade noodles. Is that kind of like sneaking new chickens into the barn and hoping no one notices???
I don't use a pasta maker attachment I just roll it out and use a herb cutter. It is a handle with several wheels on the end of it. My grandmother has always used and she got me one when she showed me how to make them. I use parchment paper on top of cafeteria trays roll them out, cut them then stick them in the freezer. After they are frozen they are sooo much easier to break apart and throw straight in the cooking pot frozen; or make up a whole bunch of them and after you break them up *quickly so they don't start to thaw* throw them in some food storage bags and back in the freezer for the next time you want noodles! Simple. Taste wonderful!

hmmm, I'm guessing there's got to be a mistake here...pasta attachments (including the ravioli maker) surely must be required

!!! I've been wanting them ever since I got my mixer, Geraldine, 5 years ago. Yes, her name is Geraldine and she's a beautiful red girl -- named after Geraldine in the BBC TV show, The Vicar of Dibley. On a visit to the Kitchenaid website I happened to look at one of the chat groups there and everyone was talking about what they named their new mixers and asking advice for names. After that I had to name mine too! Geraldine helps me a ton in the kitchen and I can't imagine being without her. I personally think she deserves a nice gift for Christmas, such as ..... oh, I don't know...maybe pasta attachments?

Yeah, I'm a mixer geek, too, I guess!

Seriously, though, I'd be interested in your noodle recipe if you'd be willing to send it to me. Thanks!

I'm so sorry about your calf. How maddening! I, too, tend to want to trust people, but it really is unbelievable how unethical some people are. It's too bad the rotten apples out there tend to spoil our outlook on everyone in general.

That's just horrible. I am so sorry you're having to go through that! So different than when dealing with chickens for sure...size and cost of the animals are much more!

Please keep us up on how they're doing.
