INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

CRSelvey- I get my hay and straw from local farmers. I paid $3 a bale.

Brad- Yes, we plan on eating our cows. But they will go to a butcher to be processed, which makes it a little easier to me than my chickens that I process. Drop the live cow off pick up nice neat packages of meat that don't even resemble my cow :)

:frow hi guys, getting caught up from the last few days.
My calves all had scours :( its bad stuff, like cocci in meat birds, but horribly debilitating and takes them fast.
Been up day and night with them, just heartbreaking.
I have been researching cows over a year now and had a pretty good "first aid kit" set up.
I put calf blankets on all 3 when we transported them Sunday and our livestock trailer is enclosed in the front.
Deep hay, kept them warm and dry. Tarped the divider to prevent drafts too! Barely took any milk when we got home.
That really had me worried! They were terribly ill by Monday morning.
Watery, horrible diarrhea out of all 3, I knew when I saw that we got "took" :somad
Started treatment immediately, 2 are recovering well. I lost one of the jersey mix around 4 am yesterday :hit
I am learning "good deals" with livestock are usually someone disposing of their problems, just sad :( .
Of course, the man that did the swap with us is not returning calls, or answering emails.
DH is saying he wants to go up there and "discuss this"... I am leaving that up to him. I won't be as trusting again.
This is twice this year I let my guard down and went with a swap, lost a piglet last time, now a calf.
I guess I need to not trust so much, but I really believe most people mean well :idunno

I'm so sorry :( in my experience almost all dairy calves have scours to some degree and it can be a really hard thing to turn around! I hope the other two get better quickly!!

hmmm, I'm guessing there's got to be a mistake here...pasta attachments (including the ravioli maker) surely must be required

!!! I've been wanting them ever since I got my mixer, Geraldine, 5 years ago. Yes, her name is Geraldine and she's a beautiful red girl -- named after Geraldine in the BBC TV show, The Vicar of Dibley. On a visit to the Kitchenaid website I happened to look at one of the chat groups there and everyone was talking about what they named their new mixers and asking advice for names. After that I had to name mine too! Geraldine helps me a ton in the kitchen and I can't imagine being without her. I personally think she deserves a nice gift for Christmas, such as ..... oh, I don't know...maybe pasta attachments?

Yeah, I'm a mixer geek, too, I guess!

Seriously, though, I'd be interested in your noodle recipe if you'd be willing to send it to me. Thanks!
Oooo wink wink! Gotcha'!

I'll do my best...I'll need to write it down as I make them first then send it to you! LOL yes, I'm one of those! My DH hates when he cooks and asks me how much I put in of what and my response is...IDK...just add it and taste it! LOL Learned it from my last 3 generations of mothers! They always have to cook it with me first ... then it's "Ahhh, I got it!" It's much harder though when I call them and ask over the phone...hahahaha Learning from the best cooks in the world though IMO!

LOL! That's how I cook too. My daughter (she's almost 15) likes to do stuff in the kitchen too, although she's still more of a beginner. And since she sees me just dumping things in without measuring she thinks she can do it too. Except when she does it, it doesn't always turn out for the best....!

Been working on getting our aquaponics system started and haven't really had time to look through all the recent posts. Am trying to catch up today!!! Sad to see some of the animal issues that have come up recently- calves, chickens, etc. Just a reminder that there are those who will do anything for a quick buck...sadly.

There were so many towns hit, its just horrible.
Glad the tornado missed you!
JOHN WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOU!!!

I agree. My mom was in the mall in Kokomo when things hit there, and all they have really talked about is the bank that got demolished- with no one in it. Their neighborhood was hit along with the fire station, and none of that has really been talked about... all because a historical building funded by the Indiana Landmarks Foundation- with no one in it- was demolished. Sad really.

Does anyone in the Indy area know if you still have to get a permit to have chickens? I was told by a neighbor that a few years ago, a friend of his was told she had to get one, and she paid $12 or something and never had any more issues with the city. BUT, I was also told my someone with chickens that they have never had to get a permit... Thoughts? Is it a grandfather clause kinda thing?

I'm in Indy-the way I interpret the city code, as long as they are pets (NOT my primary source of income) it is allowed. Roosters are often victims of the noise ordinance. ALSO-if you live in a subdivision or have a homeowners assoc, etc., their rules may negate the city code.
I've been playing with hydroponically grown fodder for our girls in the winter. So far, I've been able to ruin about 9 cups of grain by accidentally fermenting it. I use the term hydroponically grown loosely--it's 5 dish pan sprouting tubs, then they graduate into black plastic seed trays with lids. I did have two batches that turned out GREAT! The girls loved it. I'm still perfecting my system.
Welcome!

Yeah, no subdivision or HOA issues. So that helps. Thanks! Accidental fermentation isn't so bad. People would totally love that stuff- even if not the chickens. ;) One of our neighbors is learning to do grain fermentation so we can make our own sprouted grain breads!!! I may ask you questions since you are good at it! ;) And I will keep that in mind for when we try to grow fodder next winter, too!! Keep me posted on that! I would be very interested in how your process works.
