INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Brad-my dad was telling me the other day the guys at work were talking about some of your chickens. They were freaking out saying that there was a half dead chicken! lol The only description they could come up was that it didnt have feathers on its neck. I told them they probably saw a naked neck or a showgirl.

Haha. That's funny! My NN do free range so that was probably it unless they stopped and looked in the silkie/showgirl pen. That is pretty funny. The neighbor stopped over after the storm to make sure everything was ok and returned some stuff that blew into their field. They said they knew your dad. And were asking about the chickens I had penned up but never mentioned the "half dead" ones lol.

Well I got my tolbunt eggs today! I can't believe it, a day earlier than expected! And to top it off, I purchased 10eggs plus extras (typically I receive 1 extra for every 5 eggs I buy) however when I opened up the box I found 18 eggs! Almost double what I ordered! They rested all day at the PO so I will put them in the incubator either tonight or in the morning.
Cool - an early Christmas present for you! Good luck with the hatch.

This is to Peaceful walls also, I think the attachment is necessary and my mixer needs one for Christmas too. We have a countertop pasta roller and its a bit wiggly. I'm sure that means it needs replaced, lol. If you do get around to making a recipe, I'd love it as well. We use one from Lidia Bastianich, but it uses some olive oil instead of just eggs. My kids love making the pasta with me. If you do make the sheets, you can also use egg with ricotta/cottage cheese/parm and some fresh herbs for the filling too. YUM. I might need some tonight.

I'm positive you need a replacement! Maybe if our mixers make cookie dough for Santa they'll get what's on their wish list!! Wow, the pasta filling sounds so good. With all the cooking and baking I do, I don't know why I've never tried to make pasta or noodles before. It's been on my bucket list of things to do, but those are the things I'll someday get around to when I have some free time...although I don't remember what it's like to have free time anymore!

Peaceful, Sally & CR: **Of course the rest of the BYC is welcome to try**

I am thinking of doing a video for you when I make them!! Lol...it's hard to describe the How To's. As for a pasta contraption, I've never used one so I'm not sure how that would work.

**Make sure your eggs are brought to room temperature before using them or the dough will continuously spring back on you when attempting to roll it out.**
Obviously you can make with how ever much or little eggs you choose depending on the batch but this is what I do and only use what I need at a time.

Prep work:
Bring 10 eggs to room temp
Large bowl
Parchment or Freezer paper laid out (I double up making it about half the length of my dining room table)
Gold Medal flour
salt

In a large bowl
10 eggs; Use 4 whole (yolk & white) & the other 6 yolk only; beat lightly
1/2 tsp salt
add 1/2 of an egg shell filled with water
then just start adding flour slowly a bit at a time and lightly beat it with a fork *This step seems like it takes forever to get all of the flour in there and to the consistency you need*
You'll want it to still be a Bit sticky in the end

I usually separate out a fist full of dough or so at a time and knead it lightly but not too much as to not make it tough
flour a large area of your parch paper *not to much in any one spot and no large clumps*
sift the flour lightly over your dough; flour your rolling pin and roll it out evenly about 1/4 in thick or a little less *you don't want them too thick or too thin*
Making sure it's not sticking to your paper on the underside

Then I run my noodle cutter over it then depending on how long I want them I take a butter or pearing knife and run cross way to make the Length of noodle I want
Leave it all on the parch paper and Place that on a cafe tray or large cookie sheet; whatever you have to stack them on and do each set like that ensuring a parch paper in between each set.
Then I just put the whole tray in my freezer. Once they are frozen they are so easy to then break apart each noodle filling my pot as I go or freezer bags.

I hope you enjoy them and I hope my directions do them justice!
Mandy
Thanks so much for posting this! Maybe the next summer get together should include a noodle making demonstration along with a butchering demonstration. And then, of course, chicken and noodles for lunch. Yum!

It was pretty funny. They were like you mean it is suppose to look like that. Maybe it was misty. I kniw she lives somewhere over there

I'm not sure what her name is, but the husbands name is Brad (I wonder how I remember that? Lol)

Still thinking of the first time I saw a NN in person.  Pictures just don't do them justice.  I'm not getting any here but they are something to look at.

They are very different and can understand they don't appeal to everyone's taste, but they do have a very good temperament and pretty social.

I wouldnt mind having a few eventually. They are pretty neat looking. Definatley attract attention
well you know where you can get some when you're ready lol.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

The storm hit Lebanon pretty hard.

I just finished glueing the feathers back on all my chickens.

The tornado that did the damage passed 1/2 mile south of me. We never heard it or saw it, but my eldest daughter who also lives in Lebanon did see it.

No damage, thank God.

I am now in Charleston, WV helping youngest daughter with a variety of spruce up projects on her house so she can sell it and move back to Indiana. She got the job in Indianapolis at the realty board place. We are in the process of helping her buy a a nice sized tri-level fix-er-uper house on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville. She starts her new job on 1/2/13.

Then I'll have all 3 girl-chicks back in the central Indiana nest.

I was sitting in the house watching leaves pass the window at Mach 3 when I decided it would be a good time to walk down the driveway to the street and see what was going on. I later found that my wife, in her supporting role, went to the basement. Guys and gals.............

It was kind of interesting to watch the wind storm. Helluva lot of air deciding to go someplace else in a hurry. After a few minutes it started to rain HARD. I saw it coming across the field, but didn't time my exit all that well. It felt like 500 BB gunners were unleashing on me. Too bad no one was there to video the old guy lopeing down the driveway dodging Rotten Dog Millie who was running circles around me and hoping we were headed for the ATV to go for a long run.

The chickens all went inside. The ducks and guineas seemed to enjoy it. They stayed out through it all.

I and my extended family all got through it with no damage, despite my efforts to the contrary.

I still have a VERY clear picture in my mind of climbing to the top of the garage roof in Irving, TX when I was 12 (that would have been about 1957) and watching a tornado go through Dallas ripping out a 2 block wide path. My dad said it passed within a block of the factory where he worked and he could see a pickup truck fly out of the side of it from about 200 feet up. I tried to pull my 11 year old brother up so he could see, but Mom grabbed hold of him and pulled him down. She kept yelling at me to get down, but nothing short of a second blast from a shotgun would have gotten me down.
