INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I still gave that OEGB hen that you could take for a buddy for your d'uccle. She is still in with my silkies. I don't think she is too happy about it because I haven't gotten any eggs from her in months.

Nome of my OEGBs are laying either. I have tried putting her with them too, they still beat her up. Even my big sweet rooster hates her. She keeps to herself, I don't understand why everyone is so mean to her.

Brad, are the silkies you are getting by chance related to some of mine? If you know what I mean. I don't want to to divulge where you are getting them on here lol.

I don't believe so. I don't mind sharing. She contacted me before she publicly posting it on her Facebook page to give me first dibs if I wanted them. It is Hoosier Silkies on Facebook if you wanted to check them out.

If you want to give it a try just let me know. She will be 2 this spring. She is nothing special, just from the bantam in from TSC. She loved free ranging but the Roos are just too big for her and don't want her getting hurt.

I just wondered if we did do silkie swaps if they would be related. You were the one who told me where to find mine, so I thought maybe they were Kims. Thats really neat you are getting them. Are they SQ at all or pet quality?

I'm not too familiar with the SOP for silkies, but I do know I like them lol. Big poofs, good feathering on legs, and fluffy. I know some of her partridges came from seabrightmom and little ameraucana mom and she also has some silkies directly from Gerri Godiva (I think that's her name without verifying) which seem to be good quality. I would say definitely BQ with SQ potential.

Well I have homes for most of my pet quality fluffs, basically any that don't have 5 toes on both feet or middle toe feathering. I think I am keeping five of my hatch. It is so hard to decide who to keep with the lack of early sexing.

When you get them, let me know what you are keeping. I may be interested in some breeder quality birds if you are wanting to re-home some. I would like to get a line of unrelated birds. Right now I'm okay, but I only have one roo, and he is the daddy to all of the boys I would keep from my hatches. I may get a boy or two from the keepers, but it's a crap shoot figuring out who was the mother in this hatch. I am going to build breeder pens in the spring. So eventually breeding will get tricky if I don't get some fresh genetics. lol

Should I separate her from the others? Or is this behavior normal for a molting hen? BTW I believe she is an Americauna not 100% sure. She has muffs and a beard normally and has beautiful thick striped feathering of dark gray and black tones. Layed blue/green eggs when she was laying before molt (her sister has never layed! What's that all about? Lol
I'm not expert, but if it were me I would try to put the two sisters together in a basement or warmer place. It's better if they have a buddy and aren't left alone. They would probably not bicker if they were together and separated from the others, but if the one picks on the other, I'd just isolate the weak one. If she's weak and has feathers missing, she needs to have warmth. By separating her, you can monitor her eating and drinking. Scramble an egg to feed her/her sister. Give them nutritious food and try fresh fruit for hydration. As far as one laying and the other one not, from what I understand, if a pullet is due to start laying in the fall, sometimes they wait until spring to start. Keep us posted on how she's doing.

I have a buff orpington hen that was fine yesterday but this afternoon she laid down and refused to get up. I have isolated her with personal food, water and grit. She is not interested in food or drink. We checked her feet, eyes and nose and everything appears to be normal. There is no egg trapped at the vent that we could feel. Yesterday she did lay an egg so I don't think she is egg bound. We did a 15 minute Epsom salt bath just in case. She doesn't appear to have any paralysis because when the issue is forced she will walk a few steps. She also has no mites or lice of any kind. I would post a picture but it simply looks like she is asleep. If anyone has any ideas on what this might be I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone know the real scoop on necropsy? Is it free or how much does it generally cost? I didn't see any details on Purdue's website. Is there any avian, exotic, or farm vet in the Indy area that wouldn't require the drive to Lafayette?
hanakimi ~ Go to the "Helpful Resources" link posted above and you'll find avian vets. There's one in Indy--- maybe more. There's also a link about necropsies. Keep us posted, too!
