INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well its official. Im adding 19 adult/subadult silkies and atleast 11 chicks. Ilk also be gettting the chicks that hatch from the 12 eggs she has incubating. Im also getting a pair of LF cochins. Now I gotta get busy building new pens lol.
I also need to get down to business building pens. Winter is not a fun time for working long hours outside though. DMrippy on BYC built breeder pens and I am going to building a simliar structure just make a few changes. Lots ofnew additions! What color is the pair of cochins you are getting?
Gunchief - Cock-a-doodle-do to you, too! Good morning, all!

Peaceful Walls - I hope that your mother is doing better. I have been keeping her in my thoughts. How wise you were to install that buzzer and how fortunate you hadn't left home yet.
Your egg hide-and-seek sounds like a good way to occupy the children, but it would soon drive me crazy!

Pipd and Kap - thanks for posting pictures of your chickens and satisfying my chicken fix. I have been enjoying their progress as they have grown. They are all so beautiful. Kap, it would be hard for me to tell those babies goodbye! Pipd, I really enjoy your captions.

JCNY - I am so sorry your little calves have had to go through this misery. The person you got them from should have Animal Control called out on him. Just to hassle him, if nothing else. But you have to wonder what state his own livestock is in. I hope your babies pull through and enjoy happy young lives with you.

CCCCHICKENS - That is a pretty clever solution you came up with for your d'uccle. Condo living for the quality birds!
Your White Plymouth Rocks are just beautiful! I want heritage Barred Rocks for my flock, if I ever get a coop.

Minmin and Hanakimi - I hope your chickens recover quickly. Maybe they are faking so they will be taken in out of the cold?

After a three week absence with no contact, my brother-the-carpenter has been turning up regularly and doing beautiful work inside the house. Turned out he was sick with similar symptoms to when he had colon cancer a couple of years ago. I can't get him to go to the doc as he is without insurance and won't go to the ER. I started him on an application for Obamacare, but he is the one who has to complete it. He has asked me to find someone else to build the coop, so I have been looking for a good coopist. I may have found one, but he has other jobs to complete first. It is going to be spring before I have my flock.

Thank you everyone who sent sympathies on the recent death of our kitty, Smidgen. It is so good to have caring friends, even those I've never met!

We are going to Washington, DC for Thanksgiving. Our youngest son works there as a presidential appointee and our son #2 is stationed in the Navy at Newport News, Va, and will join us. The fellows are excellent cooks and will be preparing the meal. Apparently my eldest and his GF are pretty serious as she is joining us, then both will go to her parents' for Christmas. DD and fiance are also joining us. I can only imagine how far behind on this thread I will be when we get back home!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving amongst your loved ones, everyone! Be safe on the roads! Give the chickens a little treat for the holiday!

Sally
Thanks! They are really sweet birds, I recommend them for sure. Next year I may have small quanitites of hatching eggs or chicks available. If Ido I will be sure to post here. Just have to see how things go as far as fertility and everything.

CCC..Chickens, red ridge on here also made some nice breeding pens. They are for larger chickens like my RIR but I'm sure you could make adjustments. RedRidge's pens are awesome looking and she based them on the ones in this link which are also awesome.

They are really nice, but DMrippy's used a lot of stuff that is cheap-free. Making the cost a little bit of nothing. You can use a lot of pallets and my Dad has pallets galore, so works better for me that way. Plus these are only going to be temporary. I will only be using them for a few years. I already have the blue prints drawn for my permanent dream barn, but since it won't get built for years I am just getting a couple fo temporary things put up.

We have quite a few pallets too. But right now no where to put a breeding area large enough for the awesome pens. I keep looking at the swimming pool (above ground). I know the ground is covered in sand under that pool that costs a mini fortune to operate every year. I just need a good reason for getting rid of the pool, changing the fence around the pool and converting that corner to a breeding area. But alas my children love the pool. As long as they are happy and the pool survives winter, I won't be able to convince DH or them that I should get rid of it.

So for now I have the new coop, with the brooding pens inside for winter and the original coop which is the rooster pen for a week more then the breeding pen. I need to come up with a good place for 2 large roosters that I'm not breeding with though. orignally the plan was to pair up the roosters with a hen since I have 3 of each but I don't have 3 seperate pens so I'm changing it to 1 roo with 2-3 hens for 1/3 of the breeding season.

And I need to sell some 9 week old chicks. Right now all but one group of the chicks are existing with my young hens and ducks. But I don't want to push anything by introducing the large roosters. I think I would rather get the last group of chicks mixed in with the entire female flock and 1 tiny roo, than put the large roosters back in during their teenage must mate everything in site stage. Of course any chicks that don't sell now should sell as laying hens this spring when the chicken rush hits again.

Hey all! I have hatching fever. I have a brinsea advance that hold 7eggs so I don't need many but I'm interested in buying fertile eggs soon from Jubilee Oprs, Swedish flower hens, silkies, brown leghorn, or speckled Sussex. Do any of you sell these or know anyone in IN that does? Also if you own these breeds how do you like them? I don't currently have any of these but I'm fascinated by them.

Check the members list. i think Brad has it in his signature, go look at his last post. I have rose comb brown leghorns. They used to stand out a lot, but he slowly grow more timid of me reaching the age of two. People say leghorns are flighty but I have never had that problem.
