INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

And I'm certain usps have lost two egg boxes I shipped out on Saturday. Tracking shows they were dropped off at PO and sent to the sort facility on Saturday around 5pm. Now no updates since then! Called PO and no help there. I find it quite odd that both boxes shipped at same time left PO at same time and neither have moved since. So they are lost between Huntington and Ft Wayne, which is about 30mins away. So far neither buyer has contacted me about it but I'll likely reship them new eggs regardless as they won't be any good I'm sure. So frustrating!
The USPS is so irritating. Sometimes you wonder if they try to find a bunch of stupid people and hire them. Not saying everyone that works there is stupid, but a majority lol

Mother2hens, thank you for the advice. I do t have a basement but I put them in my big storage bldg together. They aren't as "close" as they used to be. They are getting along fine but aren't roosting together to stay warm. Big Momma is still acting weak and not very active at all. She didn't want to go out to free range today either, so I kept them both in together. Should I increase proton or try something else to help her feather back up faster?

Something I give my birds when they are sick is calf manna. It is actually a milk replacement for cows that people also give to sick cats often. You can get it at Rural King. And don't freak out if you just see a 50lb bag. They have smaller bags that often aren't any where near the 50lb bag, (becuase that makes loads of sense). Crossing my fingers for you she starts getting her strength back

I have heard of so many people getting turned down because they have college degrees. I think knowing someone is the main way to get a job there, most places work that way though it seems.
If you decide that you are going to get a degree check out the career center as much as anything else on campus.
That is, I don't even know but its not right! That practically saying someone is too educated to do a job. You would think it would make you more apt to hire someone. I do agree a lot of it is having connections, which really isn't fair. At the beginning one person should have just as much chance as another.

The too much education used to get to me but here is the other side's view.
A new hire costs a lot just to set up and process into payroll, forms, id badges, new schedules.
A new hire is expensive and time consuming for HR to even get through the sorting applications and interviews.
Training for the new person also costs money and consumes a current employee's time.
Once trained and started on their own, there is still a learning curve, meaning that the new hire is still costing more than they are making.
Now studies have shown that those with a degree are more likely to keep looking for a "better" job after getting hired on at a job that does not fit their degree.
If all of their arguments are right, then I can see not wanting to hire a college grad that was just trying to get some cash while they finished their real job hunt.

that said, it still stinks since so many college grads can't get jobs in their majors.

I can see that, but di they really not expect them to take a better job. A lot of money is spent on college dehrees and a lot i good it does somr people.

Hello from southern Indiana ;-)
Hello everyone. Newbies here from the Bedford area with 10 Rhode Island Red hens. We started with 6 pullets this spring (2 of which ended up being roosters & are gone) and then we just adopted 6 more laying hens from friends of ours about 2 weeks ago. So much to learn from this site and I know we've got some questions still too. We've done a bit of experimenting with different ideas along the way so far. Some ideas okay, some not so okay and then some worked out like a champ! So far so good :) Have been doing some reading here at BYC and I'm glad to see so many folks here from the Hoosier state :)

I have a feeling I will have a Black LF Cochin Cockerel available at some point if anyone is looking for one. Not available as dinner! He is too nice and we will keep him if no one wants him (I really have no need of three Roosters though). I think we joined the long list of people scammed into two cockerels instead of a pullet and a cockerel - I have a feeling one was just a bit younger and his neck feathers weren't as long. :( They are both super sweet! Here are pics of them both. I have been questioning the neck feathers on the "pullet" and they are looking more and more like the cockerel, long and getting longer. The two are sparring a lot, one of the other reasons I think they are both boys. I hope I'm wrong but I am getting more and more concerned!

Farker Farms ~ They are adorable! It sounds like bradselig is closer to fulfilling my Cochin order since he's getting a blue pair. LF or Bantam-- either way, I'd like to get two Cochins this spring.
M2H, I looked up toy piano on amazon and there were many out there....even one with a microphone so you could hear the lovely chicken song.

I'm sorry you were missing your girls. I wish I had known you were coming to Bloomington. We'd meet you there for lunch one day if you have time. Maybe you could even bring a "brain" for us to see.

CCCHICKENS & CRSelvey ~ I ordered this one from etsy.com last week after much consideration and analysis. I think that Nene will like the colorful keys and her RIR coloring will pop against the blue piano. I'm hoping it arrives this week so my kids can help tutor.

CRSelvey ~ It would be great to meet up in Bloomington sometime! With Meredith in Indy and Lauren at IU, I occasionally make the rounds-- usually when they need something. Lauren had a bad sinus infection last Friday, so I drove up, helped carry her bags, and left town. This spring, we could visit my BIL's place where geodes can be seen everywhere you look. There are also lots of fossil crinoids that your kids would like. They can be strung to make necklaces, too.
