INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have a feeling I will have a Black LF Cochin Cockerel available at some point if anyone is looking for one. Not available as dinner! He is too nice and we will keep him if no one wants him (I really have no need of three Roosters though). I think we joined the long list of people scammed into two cockerels instead of a pullet and a cockerel - I have a feeling one was just a bit younger and his neck feathers weren't as long. :( They are both super sweet! Here are pics of them both. I have been questioning the neck feathers on the "pullet" and they are looking more and more like the cockerel, long and getting longer. The two are sparring a lot, one of the other reasons I think they are both boys. I hope I'm wrong but I am getting more and more concerned!

How old are they?

Farker Farms, this is my pair at 4 months old. Lavender turned very red right before laying. Blueberry Started rapidly getting wattles around 5 months. If you haven't heard crowing yet I would say you have two girls. They look like nearly ready to lay girls to me. Hens will spar with each other. My RIR girls do it all the time. Also I am not seeing the saddle feathers on yours that should be more apparent at the age they appear to be.

Hey all! I have hatching fever. I have a brinsea advance that hold 7eggs so I don't need many but I'm interested in buying fertile eggs soon from Jubilee Oprs, Swedish flower hens, silkies, brown leghorn, or speckled Sussex. Do any of you sell these or know anyone in IN that does? Also if you own these breeds how do you like them? I don't currently have any of these but I'm fascinated by them.
Am Lambson ~ I have an English Jubilee Orpington. She is sweet and gorgeous, but has always been nervous and hesitant. When I come outside with treats, all the hens come running, even my bantam English Chocolate Orpington, but my Jubilee holds back at first. I believe that Orps in general are more gentle, and I doubt that all Jubilees are as timid as mine. I bought her as a chick. I think that Leahs Mom has Swedish Flower Hens and I know that a couple of other members recently posted some photos of their oxymoron SF "Hen-Cockerels."
Here's a recent pic of my Jubilee:

Here's my chocolate bantam, Bonbon, and the back view of Adeline

Peaceful Walls ~ Love the cat snuggling with the alpaca! What a lucky kitty.

CCCHICKENS posted: He is lavendar not blue. He is a pretty guy. He appears to be a pure ameraucana, would have to the bottoms of his feet. A while back someone was looking for an pure ameraucana for some project, but I dont remember who.

I think those are so pretty. I love the one on Darth Vadar's avatar.

kabhyper ~ We love your fluffball photos! They look like they should be party favors.

Mother2hens, thank you for the advice. I do t have a basement but I put them in my big storage bldg together. They aren't as "close" as they used to be. They are getting along fine but aren't roosting together to stay warm. Big Momma is still acting weak and not very active at all. She didn't want to go out to free range today either, so I kept them both in together. Should I increase proton or try something else to help her feather back up faster?
Something I give my birds when they are sick is calf manna. It is actually a milk replacement for cows that people also give to sick cats often. You can get it at Rural King. And don't freak out if you just see a 50lb bag. They have smaller bags that often aren't any where near the 50lb bag, (becuase that makes loads of sense). Crossing my fingers for you she starts getting her strength back
As far as nutrition, CCCHICKENS had a good suggestion about calf manna (it's a dry food pellet). If she isn't drinking much, get some Sav-a-Chick electrolyte and vitamin supplement. It can be found at Tractor Supply or Rural King. Watermelon also has electrolytes. Feed her nutritious things that she will want to eat like scrambled eggs, mealworms, sunflower kernels, grapes, berries, banana, cooked oatmeal, yogurt, and shredded cheese.

You could PM Leahs Mom because she knows a lot about healthful treatments.

Here's are descriptions of a sick chicken like yours. The problem is that you don't know what the problem is! Correct? This info is from my "Chicken Health for Dummies" book, and there are many excerpts from the book online.

Now go to this link for "How to give your chicken a physical exam." I know you looked her over, but this info is probably more in depth.
How to Give Your Chickens a Physical Examination - For Dummies
More info:
26-34 - For Dummies Info on many chicken illnesses
51-75 - For Dummies Some of the same info, some additional info

You might Google: What to feed a sick chicken
Hoepfully if you can narrow down the possibilities of what is ailing her, you'll know what kind of treatment and what kind of food is best.

Thanks! That does give me a bit of hope. We were told they were 4-6 months about 6 weeks ago, but I have no idea if that is true or not. I will be super stoked if they are both girls! You are right that I haven't noticed saddle feathers, I have just been watching the neck feathers with dread! :) I LOVE the Cochin breed so far! They make honking noises like geese and are so easy going and friendly! I love them and fully support anyone who is looking to get them!

Thank you everyone this info is very helpful. I love to read romance and historical romance adventure type books, all this other reading is very inciteful so I may change my preferences, lol. Big Momma greeted me at the door of the building this morning waiting to see what yummy treats I brought, but didn't at much when they were put down. She's drinking fine just seems awfully weak. She even squatted while she was nibbling on the food. Her feathers are quilled now so she is doing well with coming out of that molt. None of the other girls are having any issues with their molts. Everyone looks so healthy! I did pick up some calf manna (actually my daughter, who raises cows, had some) and mixed it with her feed this morn. She did good with it. Sassy, her sister, went at it like she was starving! It got pretty cold last night and we have three inches of snow this morning. The coop is nice and cuddly this morn and Mommas bldg is pretty comfy too.
Thank you everyone you are all so helpful! Is nice to have somewhere to talk to people and learn .

TooSlow- Welcome! We have several people near you. We are a chatty group. We love pictures and are full of advice!!

Minmin- a couple of my EE's were grumpier than others. If nothing else is wrong, I'd say just increase the protein .

Hello everyone. Newbies here from the Bedford area with 10 Rhode Island Red hens. We started with 6 pullets this spring (2 of which ended up being roosters & are gone) and then we just adopted 6 more laying hens from friends of ours about 2 weeks ago. So much to learn from this site and I know we've got some questions still too. We've done a bit of experimenting with different ideas along the way so far. Some ideas okay, some not so okay and then some worked out like a champ! So far so good :) Have been doing some reading here at BYC and I'm glad to see so many folks here from the Hoosier state :)

I think we all should be invited to the party so we can each take one of these party favors home with us!

One of my youngest birds who is now, unfortunately, confirmed to be a rooster sounds more like gobbling when he tries to crow. I keep thinking someone dropped off a turkey in the barn!
