INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Both of my ducks laid their first eggs today. They were smaller than the eggs that the ducks hatched out of but that is to be expected for a while. They were of course not laid in a box so not that clean. And of all things the eggs must have been laid super early, as they were frozen solid, cracking the shell by 7:30am. Since they were dirty and shell cracked, they got mixed into the soaked feed for the afternoon. I did not even get to taste them. Not as bad as a no shell first egg though.
Yeah, eggs!! I've been enjoying baking with ours -- my bread and cookies have been sooo good with the duck eggs!

Gunchief - Cock-a-doodle-do to you, too! Good morning, all!

Peaceful Walls - I hope that your mother is doing better. I have been keeping her in my thoughts. How wise you were to install that buzzer and how fortunate you hadn't left home yet.
Your egg hide-and-seek sounds like a good way to occupy the children, but it would soon drive me crazy!

Pipd and Kap - thanks for posting pictures of your chickens and satisfying my chicken fix. I have been enjoying their progress as they have grown. They are all so beautiful. Kap, it would be hard for me to tell those babies goodbye! Pipd, I really enjoy your captions.

JCNY - I am so sorry your little calves have had to go through this misery. The person you got them from should have Animal Control called out on him. Just to hassle him, if nothing else. But you have to wonder what state his own livestock is in. I hope your babies pull through and enjoy happy young lives with you.

CCCCHICKENS - That is a pretty clever solution you came up with for your d'uccle. Condo living for the quality birds!
Your White Plymouth Rocks are just beautiful! I want heritage Barred Rocks for my flock, if I ever get a coop.

Minmin and Hanakimi - I hope your chickens recover quickly. Maybe they are faking so they will be taken in out of the cold?

After a three week absence with no contact, my brother-the-carpenter has been turning up regularly and doing beautiful work inside the house. Turned out he was sick with similar symptoms to when he had colon cancer a couple of years ago. I can't get him to go to the doc as he is without insurance and won't go to the ER. I started him on an application for Obamacare, but he is the one who has to complete it. He has asked me to find someone else to build the coop, so I have been looking for a good coopist. I may have found one, but he has other jobs to complete first. It is going to be spring before I have my flock.

Thank you everyone who sent sympathies on the recent death of our kitty, Smidgen. It is so good to have caring friends, even those I've never met!

We are going to Washington, DC for Thanksgiving. Our youngest son works there as a presidential appointee and our son #2 is stationed in the Navy at Newport News, Va, and will join us. The fellows are excellent cooks and will be preparing the meal. Apparently my eldest and his GF are pretty serious as she is joining us, then both will go to her parents' for Christmas. DD and fiance are also joining us. I can only imagine how far behind on this thread I will be when we get back home!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving amongst your loved ones, everyone! Be safe on the roads! Give the chickens a little treat for the holiday!

toodlesmom ~ So sorry to hear about your BIL! I'm glad that he will be able to get insurance and won't be disqualified for having a pre-existing condition. He must be too frightened to get checked out after all he has been through. I hope he can push his fear aside and seek medical care.

As far as your coop, at least you can take time to have it completed and won't be rushed like many of us were when we didn't anticipate our chicks growing so quickly. A spring flock would be much more enjoyable.

Have a wonderful holiday in DC with your adult kids!

Well its official. Im adding 19 adult/subadult silkies and atleast 11 chicks. Ilk also be gettting the chicks that hatch from the 12 eggs she has incubating. Im also getting a pair of LF cochins. Now I gotta get busy building new pens lol.

I have a feeling I will have a Black LF Cochin Cockerel available at some point if anyone is looking for one. Not available as dinner! He is too nice and we will keep him if no one wants him (I really have no need of three Roosters though). I think we joined the long list of people scammed into two cockerels instead of a pullet and a cockerel - I have a feeling one was just a bit younger and his neck feathers weren't as long. :( They are both super sweet! Here are pics of them both. I have been questioning the neck feathers on the "pullet" and they are looking more and more like the cockerel, long and getting longer. The two are sparring a lot, one of the other reasons I think they are both boys. I hope I'm wrong but I am getting more and more concerned!

Janet- sorry about your half. I would also like to think that I can trust people that I don't even know, but I'm sure that is to much to ask. Some people just to get their heads on strait and learn to not screw over innocent strangers. With the remaning 2 calves in your care I am confident they will recover! Keep us updated!

M2H- Have you found a piano yet? I am waiting anxiously lol
Also, I looked up toy piano on amazon and there were many out there....even one with a microphone so you could hear the lovely chicken song.

Thanks so much for posting this! Maybe the next summer get together should include a noodle making demonstration along with a butchering demonstration. And then, of course, chicken and noodles for lunch. Yum!
I would really like that. Noodles are fun.

Hello everyone, I'm still in Indy at my older daughter's. If I would have read the thread earlier I might have contacted lilmizscareall about getting some eggs. Tomorrow I'm going to Bloomington to pick up my other daughter for thanksgiving break. It's apparent on this thread that thanksgiving is near with all the talk about light meat and dark meat. I prefer the discussions about pasta and egg dishes. I miss my pet chickens. My husband sent this photo of them to me today.
I'm sorry you were missing your girls. I wish I had known you were coming to Bloomington. We'd meet you there for lunch one day if you have time. Maybe you could even bring a "brain" for us to see.

And by the time you pay over $5 for a hatchery chick and add on shipping, it is close to breeder prices without shipping. If we can find you a local breeder, maybe Brad, then you could get great quality chicks at hatchery prices.
Brad- I think you have stumbled into a new vocation even if it wasn't intentional. We could keep you busy all year with special requests. Also, I loved the quail idea, but I don't know that I could butcher them. They are even cuter than chickens!

Hi and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thank you so much for thinking of my mom. She has been doing surprisingly well yesterday and today. We're also glad that we put in the emergency buzzer -- it sounds both on the main floor and in the basement. I forget where we got the idea for doing it, but would recommend it for anyone else in a similar situation. It's essentially a doorbell, but we got a really loud buzzer instead of doorbell chimes for it. We also had a ramp built in the garage, too, when we built the house, thinking about wheelchairs, etc (actually made their entire apartment accessible) and the ramp has come in handy for paramedics twice now!

Yeah, the egg hunting is fun in a way -- trying to discover the next great place to lay an egg -- but also tiresome having to trek all over the barn. I just hope we don't miss any and end up with frozen eggs one of these days!! When I checked in the duck coop/stall this morning I heard squawking above me. Yep, there was a chicken in the rafters. I saw another girl do that a few weeks ago. After laying an egg in the loft she decided to rafter hop for awhile until finally flying down. We actually had one girl coordinated enough to fly down from the loft, turn, and keep flying out the barn door to their run!

We've lost a number of cats during the past 2 years, too. For us I think it's reality of being barn cats. We had one that liked to explore the orchard across the road and unfortunately get hit one morning. We've had some wander off never to be seen again -- either some other critter got it or it decided it wanted to live with the neighbor's barn cats!) We have a sweet little girl now that was born early this spring. She loves hanging out in the barn and has never wandered. I'm hoping that she will be around for a long time! Here's a picture of her with one of the alpacas -- my husband took this one morning a few weeks ago when he went out to do chores!

I also picked up my Thanksgiving turkey today from some farmer friends -- a 23-ish pounder. They had extras so I got a second one for the freezer. I love to have them cooked, deboned and in freezer boxes ready to pull out, thaw and use. I also make a batch of broth to freeze from the bones, too. The dogs love the turkey gizzard treats (which makes my husband jealous since he likes them too!) Wish I had some of those noodles made to go with the turkey...
