INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: you are spending much less than me. I think you are closer to an average of 30 cents a week per bird if you toss in a few pennies for oyster shell to bring the feed cost to a nice round number.
My feed cost should be going down soon as I will be getting them some of the cheaper food to act as a warmth provider and filler. I just need to wait till my younger ones are a touch older before tossing in too much scratch.

Well, I dont feed purina or anything. I get my feed from a local feed mill. My young birds get starter. The other get cracked corn mixed with the feed mills, chicken mix, which contains a lot of oyster shell already. Eventually I would like to switch to the all flock raiser, maybe in the spring.

Kab--you're silkies are too cute. Haven't you been tortuous enough to those of us who are silkie-free?
You don't have to be silkie free.

I can arrange that.

I got to spend the afternoon out in the yard with my girls, here are some pics and videos:

HouseKat ~ Aww-- I love the curious EE who wanted to know what you were doing.

Kabhyper ~ Always nice seeing your ever-growing flock! How do you tell all of your Silkies apart? That's so sweet that Lavender still mothers her babies. She, Gus, and Blueberry are my favorites. I have grown to like Silkies, but I actually have never held or interacted with one, which is probably a good thing! When I first started with chickens, I just liked the classic barnyard types, but this thread has introduced me to all kinds of interesting breeds. Unfortunately, that leads to Wish Lists!

Me too!! Hoping to start contributing, I am still learning to use it.
I had several fails today, but think I was freaking them out following them with the camera

They'll get used to it. I am no photographer, but through trial and error I've found that sitting on the ground and just relaxing while they dig around helps put them at ease. I like to have the sun shining on them when possible to highlight their feathers, so I sit with the sun behind me. My neighbors probably think I am nuts when I am crawling around in the yard on my hands and knees taking photos of chickens! The nice thing about digital is that you can take a bunch of photos and select the best few. Some days I have taken around 50, and then looked at them on the screen to narrow the selects to maybe 8 depending on how they turned out. Today I took around 15 because I waited too late in the day, and I only had a couple of decent ones-- not great. Somedays I am luckier.
This is Tweedy with her sore left leg. I usually like close-up photos, but this shows some of the "nature preserve" (leaves/sticks dumping area) that I often refer to as one of their favorite places for field trips behind the fenced part of our backyard.

Below: Adeline looking for bugs. She has come out of her shell a lot, which is great to see.
My fiesty RIR Nene was trying to run her off and Adeline stood tall and flapped her wings like,
"Haven't you noticed that I'm about three times your size?"

I got a freshly ground today layer mix with 1% calcium at a somewhat local feed mill. The feed was about $2 / 50lb cheaper than the all flock at RK. The only thing is that it is a very crumble mix not pellets that I'm used to using. Right now we are feeding the majority of our chickens dry food. I think I will feed the breeder pen and the separation pen soaked food though and just make sure it does not freeze.

First Installment of Poultry Playing Piano!!!!!!!!
(My screen name on youtube is jexpound -- j for julie and the word expound)
My daughter Lauren had a good idea-- she sprinkled freeze dried mealworms in the piano keys. However, she turned her phone while filming, so you have to twist your head to watch half of it.

Next, we'll have to work on a tune.

House Kat ~ Thank you for the compliment re Adeline (as though I had anything to do with her looks--haha).
What happened to the sunny day we're supposed to have today?!
