First Installment of Poultry Playing Piano!!!!!!!!
(My screen name on youtube is jexpound -- j for julie and the word expound)
My daughter Lauren had a good idea-- she sprinkled freeze dried mealworms in the piano keys. However, she turned her phone while filming, so you have to twist your head to watch half of it.

Next, we'll have to work on a tune.

(In the background is the converted rabbit cage that I bought on CL last summer as a quarantine cage).
House Kat ~ Thank you for the compliment re Adeline (as though I had anything to do with her looks--haha).
What happened to the sunny day we're supposed to have today?!

Making progress! It is sunny here.

The piano is cute!

Well, I couldn't break them. They are stubborn little fuzz butts. So they each got a couple of eggs. I'm a push over. I moved the nesting boxes closer to where the others pile up so they wouldn't get too cold. The built in boxes are on the other end of the coop.

Well the hawks are certainly still around. In the last couple of days we've had a few close flyovers of the laying flock out in the field. Then just a few minutes ago at dusk, I had one try to come and take one of my White American Bresse. I was standing right by the run. At the last second it either saw me or realized the Bresse was in a fenced in enclosure and aborted the attack.

I'm glad I'll have the final two pens in the barn done tomorrow and get the laying flock in there. I just need to finish the fencing, and everyone will be in a pen in the barn with a totally enclosed run going outside. Looks like no free ranging for the chickens for a while. I think I can still let the turkeys wander when I'm home. I haven't seen a hawk big enough to take one of them on. And haven't seen the eagle around this year either.

Kiniska ~ Ooooh, it's very, very tempting! :drool I was thinking about getting two bantam Cochins in the spring, but I do love my English Orps and I'd love a blue one and a splash one. Please keep me posted. One concern is spending the money on pricey chicks and ending up with two cockerels. On the other hand, I'd really like to be able to bond with young chicks. I wonder if one of my orps will go broody. I realized that Adeline started laying about a week before Bonbon since they are the only ones who are laying in the coop nesting boxes. The others prefer a box in the garage. Btw, what is the cap on your roo's head? Is it to protect his comb from frostbite? I don't remember seeing that before, but no one else questioned it, so I must be the only confused one. :p How does it stay on? [rule]kabhyper ~ Love your A52A2A]jchny~
M2H, I'd let you have chicks for 5.00 each. If they ended up cockerels I'd take them back. :) The "helmet" on Judge is a tortoise shell. LOL He will only let it stay on for a few minutes.

I saw an eagle early in the summer. I did not believe it for the longest time until I read about someone else seeing one as well. Glad to hear that you had seen an eagle in our area in the past. I remember my first thoughts were along the lines of no way is there a hawk that big, it just can't be. Then it dawned on me its not a hawk, its an eagle....

Congrats on getting your pens set up. We added more pine chips to the run today and set up a house in the larger covered run for the ducks to use when I convert the small coop back to a brooding coop. Right now it is a breeding coop so even if I move the ducks in, there would be no reason to lock the adult breeding birds in the coop all day.

Within the last year I have seen 3 eagles. Two of which were juveniles, which are very easy to mistake for hawks.

I was thinking his name was Sarge! haha I'm glad you answered that question, though, because I couldn't figure out if that was a joke or a protective thingy.
Aren't the chicks going to be English Orps? Wouldn't you be charging way more than that? (I was hoping they'd be too expensive, so I could be sensible!) When is the due date and how many are hatching?

kabhyper ~ To Review~ Are the two broody silkies part of the original silkies that you had? How many did you originally have? Are all of your other young silkies ones that Lavender hatched?
Are the two broodies going to hatch 2 silkie eggs each or something else? Don't mean to be nosey-- I'm just curious.

racinchickins ~ I would freak out if a hawk swooped down like that! What kind was it? I've read that red-tailed hawks mate for life and stay in the same territory. Your white chicken needs a camouflage apron.

Yes, they will be English Orps, but it won't be from a controlled breeding. So it would be a genetic grab bag. Not the best if you wanted to breed, but just fine for layers/ pets. Also, I was being nice on the price because I know you would take care of them. :) They will be lovely fluffy butts. She is setting 10 eggs right now. If you wanted chicks that are several weeks old then it would be more expensive.
