INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello to you all!!! My name is Bruce. I'm brand new to all of this. I'm going to try my hand at Jersey Giants for eggs and meat. I live in Auburn just north of Fort Wayne. I'm looking for any help and advice on the care of the breed. So anyone near me with experience I'd love to possibly look at your setup and pick your brain. Oh and any good tips on who any good breeders near here might be?
welcme! I also dont have jg so I can't help you there.
Happy New Year! I have just found this thread after being on BYC for a while. I have chickens, turkeys and ducks. My self blue jenny is actually laying fertile eggs right now so if you are interested PM me. I am excited about this year. We are getting Sweetgrass and Tiger Bronze turkeys from Porters this year. I already have a pair of Self Blues. We are building a new barn this year to house our ever growing flock!:D
Welcome! Im not too far from you. Im in southern huntington county. How much do you chqrge for your eggs? I was planning on trying turkeys this year and was going to get bourbon reds and/or royal palms. But I could very easily live with self blues lol. They are beautiful!
The names are somewhat similar so I understand the confusion....my name is for chihuahuas and chickens. Chis is short for chihuahuas. I have raised and shown chis for going on eleven years. Perhaps I should use this pic for my avatar....lol
lol I always assumes chis was a misspelled Chris. Makes muh more sense now.

Redkey is North of Muncie on HWY 67. We actually live on Why 1 north of town. I don't have any grown birds or polts right now. Just eggs. I will come spring though
Good to know! We have a lone BR hen and boy is she obnoxious. That bird makes the most noise...attention-getting noise like "pay attention to me NOW". Funny bird. Are they all so noisy? This is our first turkey. She was supposed to be Thanksgiving dinner but you know how that goes. Couldn't imagine killing her!

Right now I only have one girl laying but I am charging $30 for 6 eggs. You can only store them about 7 days before they loose their ability to hatch. I would be happy to meet you somewhere once I have 6 more. I am shipping an order tomorrow so I will have more in about a week. PM me if you are interested.

Sorry, I replied wrong, it all messed up now....the mobile version makes it hard to know where the quotes are!

Hi Bruce,
I live just west of Fort Wayne and have 6 black Giants. I bought them at TSC in Decatur last April. They are not breeder quality and I can tell they won't be getting as large as some I've read about. They are docile birds and get along very well with my 6 Orps. I have read that the giants are slower to mature and grow, so I don't think mine are done yet. They had just started to lay before winter, but they were laying about every day, I believe. The coop for all 12 hens is 4x8 and is raised, so they have a covered outside area. When they out grew the small area I added a 14x14 run covered in bird netting. I have not had any attacks from ground predators. I did have a hawk swoop down and bounce off the netting last summer. I have been lucky though. I try to let them free range about an hour every night , but I keep a close eye on them.

Hello and Welcome! I do not raise JG, nor do I know any one who does. But during spring this year I remembering seeing a listing for hatching eggs in the buy/sell/trade thread. Here is a link to the Jersey Giants Poultry club http://nationaljerseygiantclub.com , maybe you can get some information their, I am not sure if they list members that breed them like some other clubs do. If you aren't conserned about quality or have a hard time find good quality birds, you could always just order from a hatchery.
