INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Happy New Year! I have just found this thread after being on BYC for a while. I have chickens, turkeys and ducks. My self blue jenny is actually laying fertile eggs right now so if you are interested PM me. I am excited about this year. We are getting Sweetgrass and Tiger Bronze turkeys from Porters this year. I already have a pair of Self Blues. We are building a new barn this year to house our ever growing flock!

Welcome! Redkey isn't too far away from me, a little over ahalf an hour.

Thank you very much for that info. I'm looking into some of the clubs right now. I like your setup too it looks pretty efficient. I may meet to hit you up for some tips.

Bruce1 ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! I have a non-laying Black Jersey Giant hen --my favorite of my hen pets, so I prefer not to envision her as a Sunday Roaster. lol You can click on the link at the bottom of my signature to find the members' list, which also lists their breeds. I have full info for new members below.

Ardizzone7 ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Please see info below.

About the Indiana Thread~
To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com's rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active, and our members are supportive, respectful of others' opinions, interesting, and fun! Please post messages and photos as often as you like! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a "dumb" question! We have members with different experience levels in a variety of interests. Whatever your questions may be, we should have members who can help.

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. bradselig actually adds the info, so you can PM him directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. if you have any questions about this thread, please PM Jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

You might have to expand your coop soon!
My seven can fit on one perch (when it's cold and they want to huddle), and I have a perch the same length/height parallel to the other perch. I also have a perch in the run area of the coop. Since my hens just use the coop for night, I'm not worried about crowding. I'm wondering, though, if I got two bantam cochins and two silkies, should I have them in a smaller separate coop for nighttime? I have the homemade rabbit hutch that I had converted to a coop (it's seen in the piano youtube video), which could be used for bantams. After they were past the brooder stage, I would start them out in there anyway as a quarantine.

Of course I have a bantam, Bonbon, in with six LF hens and she thinks she's a LF. She would be insulted if I tried to integrate her with the other bantams. It would be like having to sit at the children's table at holidays!

As far as personalities, maybe the Cochins and Silkies would be better off in their own coop? I'm just thinking ahead! lol

Strange question, but are there any hippie styled members out there near Bargersville that are good with children. We are in need of a back up sitter. Our standard sitters of my parents just won't do for every occasion. It would be great to find someone close to us willing to come to our home watch / play with children and possibly even check on chickens if needed too.
Would you care to define "hippie styled"??

bradselig ~ You misspelled "much" -- hahahaha just teasing!

chisNchickens ~ I thought it meant "kiss" and you just spelled it like that using a "ch" like the word "chickens" for visual aesthetics. I didn't know the chis is the nickname for chihuahuas. I learn new things everyday on this thread!
As far as your BR, all of my chickens (including my BR) can be very noisy when they see me and want treats and want me to take them out of the fenced-in area for their daily field trip. Normally they are quiet, but they make a big racket when they're begging. My RIR is the noisiest. The only other time they are loud is when they "sing" The Egg Song.

Took a few photos on the last warm day (Saturday)

These are the 16 wk old kiddos (hatched Labor Day wkend by "mama red".)
Gray is full SFH; Blacks are 1/2 SFH and BA. There are 2 blacks and one SFH gray.

This is the smaller black kiddo.

This is the larger black kiddo. This one has larger wattles than the other black but I still think a female.

This could be a bad hair day.

Peek-a-boo

And the 1 yr old sfh.

Haha. I'm using the excuse that I am using either my phone or iPad the vast majority of the time. I notice I make a lot of spelling mistakes but if I'm on the computer I don't have to look at the keyboard like I do on my phone/iPad. So I don't catch my mistakes until after I hit submit, who proof reads their post before hitting the Reply button anyways! Lol ;)

Finally caught up after being gone a few days. And...

Quote:
For my purposes in finding a sitter willing to come to my house:
Ina May would be a familiar name and not in a bad light.
Homesteading and farming would not be things of the past but normal healthy choices.
Animals including chickens and chicks would not be only thought of as stink makers needing to be cleared off of the property.
A running chicken would not be a cause to take cover as in an alien attack.
Clutter would not be a reason to freak out and start trying to get the house in perfect selling order.

Of course I would have other requirements too, like good with toddlers, not scared of cotton diapers, ....

But my three biggest issues right now with finding someone willing to come here is the chicks downstairs/ the chickens outside, chicken related clutter, and the cotton diapers.

No M2H, I meant bourbon red turkey...not barred rock. Oops.
